MCAS REVIEW NUMBER SENSE AND OPERATIONS

ORDER OF OPERATIONS "Operations" means things like add, subtract, multiply, divide, squaring, etc. 1. Parenthesis first 2. Exponents (i.e. powers and square roots, etc.) 3. Multiplication and Division (left-to-right) 4. Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right )

ORDER OF OPERATIONS - PRACTICE

ABSOLUTE VALUE What does it mean?

ABSOLUTE VALUE- PRACTICE

“PERCENT OF” The Facts:  The word “percent” means “for each 100”.  The word “of” means to multiply.  To convert a percent to a decimal (D2P), you need to move the decimal to the left 2 places. [Why?, because you are technically dividing by 100. Remember, a per-cent is out of 100!] Example #1: What is 35% of 200? Answer: (.35)(200)=70

PERCENT-PRACTICE

ESTIMATING SQUARE ROOTS To “square” a number means to multiply the number by itself. To find the “square root” of a number is to find the value that when multiplied by itself gives you the original number.

ESTIMATING SQUARE ROOTS-MULTIPLE CHOICE

ESTIMATING SQUARE ROOTS-SHORT ANSWER

POWERS (OR EXPONENTS) The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. When dividing like terms with exponents, you SUBTRACT the exponents. When multiplying like terms with exponents, you ADD the exponents.

POWERS - PRACTICE

RATES, RATIOS, AND PROPORTIONS A rate is a ratio that compares two different kinds of numbers, such as miles per hour or dollars per pound.rate The rate "miles per hour" gives distance traveled per unit of time. Problems using this type of rate can be solved using a proportion, or a formula.proportionformula
