Absent students Since you do not have the textbook, and you do not have the benefit of talking to peers, use the following slides, links and video clips to help you out. In a moment, I am going to have you click on a link. DO NOT read the whole narrative poem. Step 1: Click through a couple of the stanzas and screens to get an idea of what this poem is about. Step 2: Advance to the next slide to watch the wordless clip. Step 3: Use the link on this page to read the poem. Step 4: Work through the rest of the slides.

Before we read continued… We are going to watch a WORDLESS video clip that tells the story of this narrative poem. Watch carefully to see if your prediction was correct… We are going to read page 246 together.

The first read… Follow along to see if you can figure out what happens to these characters. Use the video clip from before to help you!

The second read… This time we will have a different narrator. See if you are able to answer the following questions: How did the redcoats know where and how to find the highwayman? How did the highwayman know NOT to return to the inn? What did Bess make sure happened so he would not come back? Think of her sacrifice. Was it noble (meaning for a good purpose), or was it pointless? It cannot be both!! What other character have we “met” this year who is similar to The Highwayman when he heard bad news?
