Copyright JNT Association A National Digital Resource Bank (NDRB) for Teachers in Schools – a UK/Spanish Collaboration Steve Hogger Head, International Relations

Copyright JNT Association What is the purpose of an NDRB? Teachers need a way to create, search for and re-use free digital resources that have been developed by their peers and other trusted sources.

Copyright JNT Association Why do UK teachers need an NDRB?  UK has invested in and helped create a thriving commercial market for digital learning resources for schools (£500m over 4 years)  UK seen as world leader in educational ICT  Lots of resources available to teachers BUT…  Teachers trust peer-produced resources

Copyright JNT Association  Content should be easy to create, find, and share, and accessible to all teachers  Need to find and access already available publicly funded content (c £30m)  Content needs to interoperate with learning platforms/VLEs  Federated access will be important  Need to support Vocational Diplomas (14-19)  Cost is critical in current economic climate What do UK Teachers need from an NDRB?

Copyright JNT Association Key features of the NDRB  Uses Spanish AGREGA platform developed by Red.es  Hosted by JANET(UK) on National Education Network  Open source software (largest in UK?) reduces costs  Digital assets shared under creative commons  Holds content developed by schools, colleges, libraries, charitable organisations, companies  Federated search possible for partner countries

Copyright JNT Association NDRB Development Plans  Database goes live in Sept 2009  Repository accessible by other countries through federated search  UK Access Management Federation will enable SSO  Will form key element of the UK (Becta sponsored) content “Eco-system”

Copyright JNT Association “The UK is renowned for excellence in ICT infrastructure, development of Digital Resources, and willingness to work with other countries and has combined these three elements in this landmark project.” Jim Knight, Minister for Schools, England
