DBQ Writing It’s not your 8 th Grade DBQ…

Purpose  Test your understanding of history – not specific recall  Test your ability to interpret and apply document information  Gather information to form an opinion or interpretation (not a singular answer)  Express your ideas in writing (including thesis) Consider yourself an investigator!

What did you learn for the documents about Rome?

Document Analysis Documents Meaning – Additional relevant info-

After the Documents…  Identify Groups (similarities/differences) meaning source time  Answer the question? Answer the question?  Is this answer complete: Is their an opinion, information or point of view missing?

Examine the Question… Analyze Roman attitudes toward technology. Identify one additional type of document and explain how it would help your analysis.

Essay Rubric pointsRubric  T  Thesis  All Documents must be used  Show Meaning and use as Evidence  Grouping (Similarities/Differences) or organization of documents  Source Point of View -  Who is the author or creator?  When was it created?  Why, or for what purpose?  Additional/ Missing Source

Troubleshooting…  Address each document separately and independently Address each document separately and independently Cite documents by author’s last name and number Cite documents by author’s last name and number Explain meaning and give evidence  Discussion of source is not simply attribution- not who they are, but why they are saying it! Discussion of source is not simply attribution- not who they are, but why they are saying it!

Document within essay  Introduce by name or author  Show your understanding of meaning  Apply information as evidence Example: Roman general, Frontinus glorifies the technological creations of Rome. He claims that they are more glorious than the famous works of the Greeks and Egyptians because they perform an important function.

Sample Point of View  Unacceptable: Cicero is biased towards the creators of technology because he is from the upper classes (attribution only!)  Acceptable: As a Patrician Cicero considers the work of the masses vulgar and unenlightened. Since Cicero is the product of the rigid deferential society of the Roman Republic he would likely feel this way about people he considers inferior.  Suggestion: Use two distinct sentences. First address meaning and evidence and then tackle point of View – “the why”

Preparation for the writing process: Synthesis…putting it all together!  Organize your Documents & Paragraphs Put documents that are similar together  consider these your future paragraphs, and start your paragraph with what they have in common Evaluate! Identify the most important “groups” or ideas/meanings  This will function as the outline – or guiding principle for your essay – chart ideaschart ideas Address ‘the why’: What information gleaned from analysis will help you explain these documents (account for differences, similarities, contradictory ideas, etc) Draft your Thesis – what are you trying to prove!

Hint: Use a chart to help you Document Groups Meaning – How do they help you answer the ? Additional relevant info?

Analyze Roman attitudes toward technology. Identify one additional type of document and explain how it would help your analysis.

Sample Additional Source  Unacceptable: It would be good to have a document from a peasant  Acceptable: After seeing the opinions of the upper classes and philosophers, it is clear that the opinion of a common worker or civilian may have been helpful on the level of technology required to sustain a healthy society.  Suggestion: Develop!!! Don’t make vague references at the end. Leave yourself enough time to discuss why it is important to have this source?

Analyze Roman attitudes toward technology. Identify one additional type of document and explain how it would help your analysis.  Include all 4 documents (citation, meaning and evidence)  Grouping  Evidence of source analysis (who, when, why)  Topic statement (thesis)
