SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity Level 2 Ocean Salinity Status 9 February 2015 ARGANS & SMOS L2OS ESL 1

SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity 2 Priorities for 2015 investigations, L2OSv7XX and beyond. Major priorities for )Develop and implement an Empirical Correction of L1c Tbs for minimizing Land Sea Contamination at L2 2) Refine the filtering of L1 contaminated data (RFI, sun, sunglint, etc..) 3)Provide improved roughness correction methods: -new GMF (higher winds) -sea state effects -two (multiple)-step inversions Second order priorities: 4) Refine OTT strategy 5) Refine glint models (galactic and sun) 6) Improved QC control in inversion 7) Test new implementation of retrieval methods (two-step, monte-carlo) 8) Production of a SMOS TEC

SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity DIP activities schedule 3

SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity Detailed Implementation Plan (DIP) 5

SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity Priorities & status for 2015 investigations (from DIP) 6 Mixed-scene correction: empirical Correction&/or filtering Method for the Land- Sea Contamination (priority 1, lead NR) implemented in L2OS prototype: 2G ADF, +30 seconds to read, +1G RAM JT will present status Filtering: refined L1 contaminated data filtering (RFI Sun, others...) (priority 1, lead JLV) analysis of reprocessing products will start soon… Roughness: improvement of the nonlinear roughness corrections (priority 1, lead NR) LOCEAN working on model 1 Status of model 2 (Ifremer) & model 3 (BEC) TBD Improvement in Glint Models (priority 1, lead JT) Will be done after mixed-scene correction TBD TEC follow-up and product definition (priority 2, lead JLV) on-going, no presentation yet
