CRCT: Hernando De Soto What standard are we studying? ELEMENT: Evaluate the impact of European contact on Native American cultures; include Spanish missions and the explorations of Hernando de Soto (pg 19, 24-31)

In 1539, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto left Havana Cuba with a huge army of men. They landed in Florida and marched North. In 1540, they entered Georgia – searching for GOLD. While they never found gold, his soldiers killed thousands of American Indians. Many more American Indians died from diseases brought to the New World.
