The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute 341 South Patrick Street Alexandria, VA FAX Implementing the Regs - 1 Engine Manufacturer Tasks –Integrated products –Support OEMs for non-integrated products OEM Tasks –Non-integrated products Vendor (Supply Chain) Tasks Testing, Certification, Distribution

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute 341 South Patrick Street Alexandria, VA FAX Implementing the Regs - 2 For each of the players involved, even in the simplest situations, the process is inherently iterative, involving, for a given aspect of the regulations: –a proposed conceptual solution or solution(s) –initial testing (by vendor, engine mfg. and OEM) –confirmation of solution(s) and ranking/fine tuning, as needed –conceptual design incorporation –additional (broader) testing –additional fine tuning and design changes –more testing (perhaps - in use, field, durability, etc.) –(hopefully) acceptance of solution

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute 341 South Patrick Street Alexandria, VA FAX Implementing the Regs - 3 Significant development and testing work will need to be done by vendors. Each will have to do iterative process development listed earlier: –catalyst suppliers –muffler suppliers –tank suppliers –resin and additive suppliers, or other material suppliers –barrier treaters –canister suppliers –hose suppliers –connector suppliers Each vendor has to deal similarly with their vendors/suppliers Additionally, engine manufacturers and OEMs will be evaluating and selecting candidate(s) from each of these supplier categories

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute 341 South Patrick Street Alexandria, VA FAX Implementing the Regs - 4 Engine Manufacturer Tasks –Exhaust Obtain catalyst samples Development testing on catalyst samples in “real world” scenario - this is iterative (e.g., muffler changes, etc.) Provide engine samples to OEMS with catalysts, mufflers, fuel systems and tanks as appropriate –Evap Permeation reduction options evaluations (barriers?, new materials?) - extensive testing still ahead Diurnal venting reduction options (pressurization implications, canister issues, other devices/approaches?)

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute 341 South Patrick Street Alexandria, VA FAX Implementing the Regs - 5 OEM Tasks –Work with engine supplier and vendors –Evaluate options, conduct testing and field trials, develop specifications –Thermal Issues (shielding?, redesign?) –Noise and Vibration Issues –Pressurization and Explosion Issues –Distortion and Design Envelope Issues –Tooling, Manufacturing, Quality Issues –Testing (Durability, Safety, Emissions Certification, etc.) –Cost and Market Decision Issues –Distribution Issues –Doing all this for multiple products
