DARIAH Rutger Kramer Software Development Coordinator DANS – KNAW, The Hague, NL EGEE09

CESSDA Rutger Kramer Software Development Coordinator DANS – KNAW, The Hague, NL EGEE09

DARIAH in a nutshell Research Infrastructure for the Arts & Humanities Taking down walls between researchers and resources – In different countries – Across Disciplines Foster collaboration, exchange of ideas & innovation in e-Humanities EGEE09

CESSDA in a nutshell Research Infrastructure for the Social Sciences Enabling efficient & international exchange of – Survey Data – Economic Forecasts, Figures, etc. – Qualitative data Foster collaboration, exchange of ideas & innovation in e-Social Science EGEE09

ICT vision ICT is core of both DARIAH & CESSDA Aspects: – Interconnection and Interchange – On-line Analysis and Data-mining (semantic web) – Preservation of data – On-line collaboration in research – AAA and Single Sign-On – Harmonization of unstructured data EGEE09

ICT requirements For both CESSDA & DARIAH: – On-site & Distributed data – Permanent Storage of – Datasets (varying between 1 MB to several GB) – A/V Material (collections up to several TB) – Interconnecting sources all over Europe, the US and Australia – Single Sign-on, Very fine-grained AAA – User community encompasses entire AH&SS field – Compute needs: unclear for now EGEE09

Current Status & Timeline DARIAH & CESSDA are both Preparatory Main Deliverables: – Prototypes & Demonstrators – Architecture Diagrams – Organizational Structure & Legal Framework Both DARIAH and CESSDA will deliver an architecture / design – CESSDA: February 2010 – DARIAH: August 2010 (possible extension) EGEE09

Challenges and Suggestions Federated AAA – Is federation feasible? – Can Auto/Auth be fine-grained enough? Distributed storage and exchange – Can OAI-ORE provide a solution? EGEE09

Challenges and Suggestions Both DARIAH & CESSDA recognize the potential of HPC, grids and EU networks Things we’re looking for: – Platform independent UI-stack – Fine-grained and User Friendly AAA – File manipulation, discovery and retrieval Metadata storage Search functionality – Guaranteed Durable Storage EGEE09
