Updates to North Carolina Read to Achieve September 27, 2015

Personalized Education Plans No longer a requirement of the Excellent Public Schools Act Not required, but not prohibited HB 237 Must identify students at risk for academic failure and not successfully progressing toward grade promotion and graduation

Reading Camps Addition of first and second graders “Demonstrates reading comprehension below grade level as identified through administration of formative and diagnostic assessments” Attendance encouraged Parents have final decision about attendance

Accountability Number and percentage of first graders not demonstrating reading comprehension at grade level Number and percentage of second graders not demonstrating reading comprehension at grade level Report to State Board of Education and General Assembly

Revised RtA Guidebook Changes –PEP requirement and suggested forms removed –RtI information replaced with MTSS information –KEA information/dates updated

Good Cause Exemptions LEP students –Less than 2 school years of instruction in ESL –July 1, 2014

Portfolios Hard copy passages have not been shipped from NCTOPS Waiting for close of General Assembly session Currently, the portfolio will be the same as last year Instructional passages – the same Assessment passages are selections plus 5 per standard from reading camp Cannot use assessment passages for instruction
