2 Impacts ALL 3rd graders in the state of North Carolina!!!
What is Read to Achieve? The Read to Achieve program is a part of the Excellent Public Schools Act which became law in July of 2012 and applies to all schools at the beginning of the school year. Impacts ALL 3rd graders in the state of North Carolina!!!

3 North Carolina Read to Achieve
The goal of the State is to ensure that every student read at or above grade level by the end of third grade and continue to progress in reading proficiency so that he or she can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts needed for secondary education and career success.

4 Read to Achieve: End Goal
For students to show proficiency in 3rd grade by passing the EOG assessment at the end of 3rd grade. However, there are multiple opportunities to show proficiency through other pathways.

5 Read to Achieve: Road to Promotion
There are 4 paths in Read to Achieve for all 3rd graders in the state of North Carolina: Pass or Pass w/Label BOG/EOG mClass TRC Level P Portfolio Exemption

6 Read to Achieve: Road to Promotion
Good Cause Exemption BOG3--pass with a Level 3 (439-minimum scale score) All 3rd grade students took a Beginning of Grade (EOG test) during the first 11 days of this school year NC READY Student Report was sent home indicating your child’s score on the BOG3 test

7 Read to Achieve: Road to Promotion
End-of-Grade (EOG) EOG – reading and math Multiple-choice tests Read selections and answer questions Scores range Level 1 (the lowest) to Level 5 (the highest).

9 Read to Achieve: Portfolio Process
Evidence of ALL benchmarking and progress monitoring from mClass Reading 3D Level P on TRC portion of benchmark Reading 3D is used to give teachers information about what students need in reading instruction. students must read story accurately (above 90% of words correct at P and comprehend through oral and written questioning--2 written response questions, must pass both to pass the level. students are progress monitored in areas where they need more practice

10 Read to Achieve: Portfolio Process
The portfolio MUST contain the following to show proficiency: Evidence of proficiency on 36 completed passages, three passages for each of 12 standards. Proficiency: 70% or 11/15 with 3 passages for each standard. (Each passage has 5 questions)

11 Read to Achieve: Road to Promotion
Good Cause Exemption--Local Alternative Assessment SRI--Lexile score of 725 or higher SRI is computerized reading assessment in which students read passages and complete questions (20 to 25 total)...students may have to infer or use text details to figure out the answer

12 Read to Achieve: Road to Promotion
Good Cause Exemptions Limited English Proficient students with less than two years of instruction in ESL

13 Read to Achieve: Road to Promotion
Good Cause Exemptions Students with disabilities whose IEP program indicates use of alternate assessments and reading interventions Alternative assessments usually means Extend 1--a completely different form of end of year assessment than EOG

14 Read to Achieve: Road to Promotion
Good Cause Exemptions Students who have (1) received reading intervention and (2) previously been retained more than once in K, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grades Reading interventions must be documented

15 Read to Achieve: Portfolio Process
Evidence of an ongoing PEP with goals, interventions and instructional strategies based on student data that matches the needs of the individual student

16 Read to Achieve: Pass EOG
Student will be promoted to 4th grade if he/she passes the EOG on either the first administration or retest(s)

17 Read to Achieve: Summer Camp
Mandated by the state of North Carolina as a 6 week program, for 3 hours a day for any student who did not pass or complete the portfolio during the school year OR does not pass the EOG OR does not show proficiency with any of the other good cause exemptions.

18 What Can You Do? Schedule a conference with your child’s teacher
Contact state officials about the mandate Have your child read every night Check the Aberdeen Elementary webpage for updates about Read to Achieve Check the MCS webpage for Read to Achieve updates

19 Summer School is optional…It is recommended for all students who did not complete/pass the portfolio or pass the EOG or retests. Remember… If your child does not attend Summer School, he/she could be automatically retained in the 3rd grade.

20 Remember… To talk to your child about their reading level and their reading goal. To have your child read EVERY night
