Grammar: Fixing Comma Splices Grammar Girl

Comma Splices Separate two main clauses that are connected by a coordinating conjunction Coordinating conjunction: And, but, or Squiggly ran to the forest, and Aardvark chased the peeves.

Comma Splices Squiggly ran to the forest, Aardvark chased the peeves. (wrong) Sara obviously named that one, she was a sucker for those old “Happy Days” reruns. (wrong)

Comma Splices Sara obviously named that one. She was a sucker for those old “Happy Days” reruns. Sara obviously named that one; she was a sucker for those old “Happy Days” reruns. Semicolon (;) is a sentence splicer. Its job is to splice complete sentences together.

Comma Splices They were getting it, he had them. (wrong) They were getting it. He had them. (separate with period) They were getting it; he had them. (connect with semicolon) They were getting it, and he had them. (connect with coordinating conjunction)

Comma Splices: Conclusion Commas aren't meant to join main clauses all by themselves; to force them into that role is to perpetrate a comma splice. That's bad, but it's easy to fix. Handout: Complete 1-4 by adding a coordinating conjunction. Create your own sentence with a comma and coordinating conjunction for 5 and 6.

Recap: Scene ii For the sentry, it was most important to save _________. Antigone says she did not defy _____’s law. Who said, “Who is the man here, She or I, if this crime goes unpunished?” Significance? Antigone says there are others on her side. Why don’t they speak up?

Recap Scene ii Who else is arrested? Ismene wants to join Antigone in death and has been persuaded that she did the right thing. How does Antigone react? How does this make you feel about Antigone? Ismene? Creon is not only punishing Antigone, but _______. The Chorus says, “No pride on earth is free of the curse of heaven.” What is the ultimate sin? Who is guilty of it?

Antigone: Exit Slip ◦ In what ways are Antigone and Creon different? ◦ Alike? ◦ Did you think it was possible for them to resolve their differences?

Exit Slip Which character did you sympathize with and why? Did your sympathies change over the course of the play? Explain.

Exit Slip In Scene 1, line 138, the sentry suggests that Creon may have an internal conflict. What is the sentry referring to specifically? Do you think that he has hit upon the truth? Explain.

Summarizing Scene 2… 1. The sentry brings Antigone to Creon and accuses her of burying Polyneices 2. Antigone does not argue; she stands up for herself and demands that Creon should kill her 3. Creon then says that Ismene should also die. Do you think she should? How has Ismene’s attitude changed? 4. Why does the Choragos say that Creon should not kill Antigone?
