Different methods

What is Bottom Trawling? Run along the sea floor to capture large amounts of marine life. Run along the sea floor to capture large amounts of marine life. The nets are about 50 metres wide, that’s half an acre! The nets are about 50 metres wide, that’s half an acre! The net catches all sorts of creatures, from crabs to dolphins and very rare corals. The net catches all sorts of creatures, from crabs to dolphins and very rare corals.

Pros Efficiency -Bottom trawling provides an effective and efficient way to fish fast and catch some ground fish that are usually inaccessible. When fishing leads to more fish? -"Fish persist at trawling intensities where they would have gone extinct otherwise."

Cons High levels of discards Damage to seabed Negative effect on tourism

Bottom trawling of NZ Orange roughy and Hoki are trawled in NZ waters - These include some of NZ’s biggest exports. Marine mammals are starving in New Zealand coastal waters - In particular, the sperm whale and endangered sea lions.

Who is AGAINST Bottom Trawling and Why?

Fishing orientated countries Commercial fishing companies Who is FOR Bottom Trawling and Why? E.g. Iceland

What can New Zealand as a community do to make a difference?

What do you think?
