SECOND GRADE CURRICULUM NIGHT

Operations and Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. Add and subtract within 20. Work with addition and subtraction equations. Mathematics

Number and Operations in Base Ten Extend the counting sequence up to Understand place value. (Hundreds, Tens, and ones) Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Fluently add and subtract within 100 and mentally adding/subtracting 10 or 100 to a number between Add up to 4 two-digit numbers. Show work and be able to explain thinking. Measurement and Data Estimate and measure the length using appropriate tools and different units of measurement. –inches, feet, cm, m Relate addition and subtraction to length. Tell and write time 5 minutes interval. Solve word problems involving dollar bills and coins. Represent and interpret data through line plots, pictographs, and bar graphs. Math Objectives Cont.

Geometry Reason with shapes and their attributes. Recognize and draw shapes based on the number of angles and/or faces. Triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. Determine area using same size squares to count and find the total. Partition circles and rectangles into 2, 3, or 4 equal shares. Halves, thirds, and fourths

Mathematics  Math Investigations: A program that involves inquiry based thinking and hands on problem solving enabling students to understand mathematical concepts.  Sample solutions: There are 15 cows in the field 14 more cows join them. How many cows are in there in all?  MODELING Solution Strategy  COUNTING Solution Strategy  DERIVED FACTS Strategy

Place Value Please solve the following problem: 58+17= ? HHow did you solve this problem? DDiscussion Possible solutions: =60 8+7=15 15 is a 10 and a 5.  = =75 2. Make the 58 a 60 by taking 2 from would become a is a 10 and a 5. SO… = Number line. 58  10 more is 68. Then 7 more to get to 75. (Shows a deeper understanding of place value.)

4. Number Bonds 58+17= = = = 75

Subtraction = = = = 41

Literacy  DRA (Developing Reading Assessment)  Formatives  Story  Cold Read  Other CMS  Argumentative/Opinion  Narrative  Informational AssessmentsWriting

A student’s writing should: Write a series of sentences organized, on topic, and in sequential order. Varied sentence patterns and lengths. Use descriptive writing and elaboration. Be organized logically. Spell high frequency words correctly. Use paragraphs inconsistently in writing. Use correct capitalization and punctuation most of the time. Writing

Accelerated Reader  Is not graded, but highly encouraged.  Reading level is based on the STAR test.  AR is an independent reading program.  Students read and comprehend a book in their assigned level and then complete a computerized test.  80%-100% is a passing score for second graders  Students who reach their goal will receive a certificate and teacher decided reward.  Goals are based from students reading levels and determined by the AR program.

Science and Social Studies Science  Understand properties of solids and liquids and the changes they undergo.  Understand patterns of weather and factors that affect weather.  Understand animal life cycles.  Remember organisms have similar and different characteristics from their parents.  Understand the relationship between sound and vibrating objects. Social Studies  Understand how various sources provide information about the past.  Use geographic representation, terms, and technology to process information from a spatial perspective.  Understand the effects of humans interacting with their environment.  Understand basic economic concepts.  Understand the purposes of governments.  Understand the roles and responsibilities of citizens.  Understand how various cultures influence communities.

Project based learning where students use resources to… Solve problems through inquiry Think critically Think creatively Communicate Collaborate Use media Build 21 st Century Learning PI Personal Inquiry
