STANDARDS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W a Introduce precise claim(s), distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and create an organization that establishes clear relationships among claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and evidence. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W a CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W b Develop claim(s) and counterclaims fairly, supplying evidence for each while pointing out the strengths and limitations of both in a manner that anticipates the audience’s knowledge level and concerns. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W b

CEEC Strategy C- LAIM + REASON E- evidence- give your quote from the text E- Explain the quote in your own words and tell how the line proves your original point C-Conclude and give an overall statement that summarizes your point and connects it to something else in literature, life etc.

COUNTER AN ARGUMENT That is not true because… That does not matter because…

CEEC Strategy (paragraph 2) C-Counterclaim- see example below -Some people may think that….but that isn’t true because E-evidence –This evidence should support your refute E-explain-All quotes/evidence must be explained C-concluding statement for paper

EXAMPLE: Sample prompt: Was the lottery good for the town in the story? The town truly benefitted from the lottery. It allowed for the whole community to come together and bond. The text says that the women “greeted one another and exchanged bits of gossip as they went to join their husbands” (1). This shows that the lottery gave the town a reason to come together and socialize because the women use the time to talk and gossip. Without the lottery, the town would not be as close, and many of the people might not even talk to each other. Some people may say that the lottery harmed the town because people died. However, that doesn’t matter because every person chose to live in that town. They could have moved to another town nearby that no longer had a lottery. In the text, Mrs. Adam says, “"Some places have already quit lotteries” (3). This proves that the people knew there was somewhere else to live, but chose to stay because they believed in the lottery and in their system. Therefore, the lottery should stay because it brought the town together, and the community chose to live there and support it.
