Chapter 12 Team Decision Making Tools

Objectives Decision Making Tools: Brainstorming Nominal group technique (NGT) Voting

Team Decision Making Tools 1. Nominal group technique (NGT) is a tool to prioritize a list of items. Each team member writes a list of items with a ranking. They are then compiled and the ones with the highest priority are worked on by the team. 2. In force field analysis a driving force lists things that help make a future state occur and the restraining force are those that prevent the future state from occurring. Depending on the organizational environment it may be effective to eliminate the restraining environment than focus on increasing the driving forces.

Team Decision Making Tools 3. Multivoting: Each team member has 100 points to allocate as they feel appropriate. Items with the most points are worked on first. 4. Conversion/diversion: Diversion refers to those team activities that produce a broad or diverse set of options (example: brainstorming). Once many options have been listed, conversion activities are used to narrow the list and prioritize items for action.
