Things That Can Change

Definition Something that can change is called a variable.

Can you find the variables?

Part A: Statement #1 The higher the temperature of water, the faster an egg will cook.

Statement #2 The time it takes to run a kilometer depends on the amount of exercise a person gets.

The Manipulated or Independent Variable A variable that is deliberately changed is called the independent variable.

Part B: Statement #5 The amount of pollution produced by cars was measured for cars using gasoline containing different amounts of lead. Amount of Lead

Statement #6 Lemon trees receiving the most water produce the largest lemons. Amount of Water

The Responding or Dependent Variable Sometimes a variable changes as a result of an idependent variable. It is called the dependent variable.

Part C: Statement #8 More bushels of potatoes will be produced if the soil is fertilized more. Independent Dependent
