VOCABULARY 1. piedmont - this word means “foot of the mountain”; rolling hills and beautiful valley inland from the coastal plains 2. barrier islands - long, low islands found along the shore line

3. wetlands - lands that at times are covered with water 4. Innner Coastal Plain- farther inland; slightly higher elevation than the Outer Coastal Plain

5. sea level - same height as the surface of the ocean 6. Myrtle Beach- Atlantic Coast resort city in South Carolina 7. fall line- a line of waterfalls between Piedmont and the Coastal Plains

8. Appalachia - an area in and around the Appalachian Mountains 9. elevation map - a map that shows how high land is 10. Outer Coastal Plain - land that is flat with a low elevation; inland from the shore
