Tropical Rainforest Todd Jackson and Brittni Jones 2 nd Period Ecology

Climate Average temperature: 77 degrees Fahrenheit Temperature: NEVER DROPS BELOW 64 degrees Fahrenheit –( Because the plants are not adapted to frost)

Location CENTRAL AMERICA THE AMAZON AFRICA SOUTHERN ASIA AUSTRALASIA

Characteristics Rainforest covers less than 6% Produces 40% of worlds oxygen ¼ of the worlds medicine comes from the rainforest It Rains about 90 days a year Trees are 164 feet and tall Most diverse terrestrial Biome

Seasons Winter: Warm and Rainy Summer: Warm and Rainy Fall: Warm and Rainy Spring: Warm and Rainy

Soil Type Soil: is very nutrient poor Topsoil: only one to two inches deep Plants store their own nutrients Soil is infertile because it is 100 million years old and has taking a beating from the elements

Species Diversity Plants

Species Diversity Animals

Food Web Sun Macaw Rain-forest Plants SlothAnteater Jaguar Bacteria Termite Ant Red-eyed Tree Frog Scorpion Kinkajou Howler Monkey Beetle Decomposing Leaves

Adaptations Sloth's: –covered in greenish algae –move very slow Trees: –Form buttresses to absorb nutrients –Roots must be shallow to absorb nutrients Attacking: –Have shape teeth, claws, and horns Butterflies: –Non poisonous butterflies mimic poisonous butterflies Leroy Jackson

Human Influences Deforestation: Humans needed space a wood Rainforest trees: cleared for farming, grazing, mining, and living space Many species are lost everyday Example: –A single tree can have as many as 43 species of ants on it

Medicine Most of the worlds medicine come from the rainforest plants 120 prescription drugs sold worldwide today are from rainforest plants Many of these plants are said to be the next cure for cancer

Organizations/web site that help prevent deforestation Rainforest Alliance Rainforest Action Network Red Jellyfish: –Donates money to replant trees Care2: –Informational web site to prevent species loss and deforestation The Rainforest Site: –Donates money and time to save rainforest
