Taking and Managing Risks with Technology This 30 min presentation will address the conference theme: How can we use what we have learned? Mark Stone: HELP CETL Director & AD Teaching & Learning Dr Neil Witt: Director of Technology Enhanced Learning

Presentation overview This presentation draws on the experience of using technology at different stages of the educational development process [project design, planning, management evaluation, dissemination and embedding]. Examples from the FDTL SPAT project, the HELP CETL and related JISC projects will also highlight the complexity of working with multiple partners and in consortia relationships.

Technology SPAT to CETL Website - PR, information, repository, legacy CD and CD image - still in use Word, rtf and PDF Inter-project collaboration - conferences User focus User customisation Managing contributions and version control Building relationships

Knowledge Exchange Network [KEN] Overview: Risk taking capital investment A knowledge management and community of practice support tool Working across a distributed network of 20+ HE in FE Colleges / partner institutions Almost 400 users

KEN Managing the risk Working to a specification Moving from Design and Build, to buy and customise Scheduled updates and adaptation based on user feedback Having a back up server Moving from user training to leadership support Proof of concept and embedding phases

KEN Managing the risk Standards based approach Focus on functionality not opportunity Team usage and participant usage - different kinds of risk

Video Conferencing Overview: Risk taking capital investment Moving from 5 to 17 regional sets of room based equipment Involved tendering Lots of administration, updates and contacts

Video Conferencing

Video Conferencing Managing the risk Memorandum of understanding 40% discount for region for three years led to further network expansion Relationship led to VC management software massive discount, with headroom for region Planned hand over of management software and support of the network to University New institutional development allows desk top VC to interact with room based users

Regional Repository Overview: JISC funded project linked to CETL and regional HE in FE network Changed way of thinking - user focus Bringing multiple projects, collections and users together SPAT now going onto repository

Repository Managing the risk Meta data - what is it as well as what does it deal with IPR - procedures and policies Advice and guidance - Web2Rights Collaboration JISC OER & C-Change Timing of work and time to do work – better from the start Skills developed and retention Walking before running - SWLLN pilot

Using KEN to support JISC UsPaCE Overview: Call for HE in FE expression of interest in JISC funding call Ideas generated along with an assessment of commitment and capacity to work together using technology Interest in money and prestige vs participation and contribution
