Whales By Jack, Brian A., Michael, Mathias, and Brian S.

Introduction The next few slides are pictures and facts about our whales. The next few slides are pictures and facts about our whales.

Killer Whales By Jack I drew the killer whale also known as the orca. Orcas eat fish, squid, penguins, as well as sea lions, seals, and other sea mammals including some of the biggest whales. They hunt for food in herds called pods. They are in all of the worlds oceans from the poles to the tropics. They are usually gentle in captivity, and there is no record that a killer whale has caused a human death. It is the largest member of the dolphin family. A male can grow to over thirty feet and weigh nine tons. That is a little about the orca whale. I drew the killer whale also known as the orca. Fin Whale By Mathias The whale that is in my picture is a fin whale. The fin whale has a pointed head, a streamlined body and thin flukes. Those things make it a fast swimmer. These are the second largest whales next to the blue whale. They have long grooves on there throat that allow there throat to expand while feeding. Whales with these grooves are called rorquals from the Norwegian word for groove or furrow. Fin whales usually work in pairs to round up and eat schools of fish. They can reach seventy to ninety feet and weigh eighty tons. That is a little about fin whales. The whale that is in my picture is a fin whale. Right Whale By Brian S. This is a Right whale. They were once very common in the North Atlantic Ocean. It was given its name by early whalers who said they were the right whale to catch because they swam slowly, had lots of blubber and baleen, and they floated when dead. Sense so many were killed they are know quite rare. Each whale has his or her own pattern of strange bumps along its head called callosities. Scientists sometimes identify them by their pattern of callosities. They can be more than fifty feet and weigh more than seventy tons. This is a Right whale.
