Patrick Janot Physics Studies: Status on 31/08/15  Outline u The international context u The FCC-ee at Summer Conferences u The second year of the design study 31 August 2015 Physics Studies: Status 1

Patrick Janot International context (1)  There is a worldwide interest in e  e  circular colliders u In Europe, with the FCC u In Asia, with the CEPC u In US, with direct support to the Chinese effort l 31 August 2015 Physics Studies: Status 2

Patrick Janot  The physics case of the FCC impresses all e  e  physicists u Example: from a talk by T. Barklow at the CEPC workshop l In general, no mention of FCC-ee in italks l Most FCC-ee physics papers not cited International context (2) 31 August 2015 Physics Studies: Status 3

Patrick Janot International context (3)  The international situation is not easy u Japan MEXT issued a summary report on 6 Aug (attached to the agenda) l ILC means “a 500 GeV ILC” l The ILC must show the added value in term of new physics è Both from Higgs and top precision physics and from new particle searches l The LHC results will be closely monitored to evaluate this added value l The international human resources needed will be carefully evaluated è Increase by a factor 10 needed to build the ILC ? l Discussed in an ICFA meeting at the lepton-photon conference u The economical situation in China recently became more difficult l Might delay large investments for science u It is for us (FCC-ee) to continue to lead the show l With the best physics case è Largest luminosity, up to the top threshold è Largest sensitivity to new physics l With the best infrastructure (CERN) 31 August 2015 Physics Studies: Status 4

Patrick Janot The FCC in Summer Conferences (1)  We don’t receive much help from outside … u The press office does not speak of us u We are not referred to in other’s talks  … but our message is going through anyway u Four beautiful parallel presentations and two beautiful posters in EPS-HEP Vienna l Higgs physics at the FCC (M. Klute) l Top couplings at the FCC (P. Janot) l Precision EW physics at the FCC-ee (M. Dams) l Flavour physics at the FCC-ee (S. Monteil) l Physics at the FCC-ee (poster by A. Blondel) l The FCC-ee machine (poster by M. Koratsinos) è See slides &posters at u … with a number of new results since last year. u Summary talk on future colliders given by Fabiola l See 31 August 2015 Physics Studies: Status 5 FCC-ee is very active in providing speakers!

Patrick Janot Fabiola’s talk excerpt (4) 31 August 2015 Physics Studies: Status 10

Patrick Janot The second year of the design study (1)  We have started to organize specific workshops on specific topics u See l Detector designs, June l Radiative corrections, July l Higgs physics, September High precision  S measurements, October l The physics beyond precision measurements, to be scheduled è Note: positive contacts with the Gfitter team have initiated l General FCC-ee workshop, to be schedules u Meant at defining the work to be done l Should each be followed up by a second workshop è Towards the preparation of the final report  We have received the contribution from a few summer students u Including a common project with the CERN/CLIC team l Fully simulated events in the CLIC/ILD detector l Complete analysis (top couplings) at FCC-ee energies (√s = 365 GeV) 31 August 2015 Physics Studies: Status 11

Patrick Janot The second year of the design study (2)  Lessons learned from the first two workshops u There is a lot to do l From detector designs to theory calculations u There is a lot of possible synergies with linear collider studies l The CLIC group is willing to contribute to some sort of “cooperation” u More people and organization would help l Creation of a MDI task force (being set up by M. Benedikt) l New fellow and doctoral students joining the FCC software effort l Evaluation of the number of “theorist-year”s needed ? u Note: Startup of the LHC Run2 at 13 TeV l Less people available to work on the FCC ?  Conclusions u The situation is not easy for the FCC-ee But it may be more difficult for other e  e  projects u We must not give up l We would certainly benefit from more support 31 August 2015 Physics Studies: Status 12
