Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities (SRR) SRR oversees the administration of all GW’s academic and non-academic student disciplinary systems Emphasizes civility, integrity, and personal responsibility Office of Academic Integrity (AI) Facilitates hearings related to violations of the “Code of Academic Integrity” Outcomes may lead to Failure of Assignments or Academic Courses, Suspension, or Expulsion Provides educational initiatives to the GW community related to academic dishonesty

Basic Tenet of Academic Integrity Students are responsible for the honesty and integrity of their own academic work, in addition to any group or collaborative academic work attributed to them which is submitted for academic evaluation or credit in an academic course.

Some Academic Integrity Examples When WritingYou must show where you got your ideas; CITE sources You must NOT use other people’s writing or ideas without their permission If you do not cite sources, it’s called PLAGIARISM When gathering dataYou must use the results that you have You must NOT make up or change results If you make up or change data falsely, it’s called FABRICATION When completing coursework You must only work together if the instructor allows you You must NOT work together if you are told to work alone If you work with another person but were told to work alone, it’s called CHEATING When taking tests or completing coursework You must follow the guidelines provided by the instructor You must NOT use materials that are not allowed or use things like your cell phone if it is not allowed during a test If you don’t follow the guidelines of your instructor, it’s called CHEATING When you are sickYou can inform your instructor and ask if any consideration may be given about an assignment You must NOT forge a doctor’s note and provide it to an instructor If you give false or misleading information to an instructor, it’s called FABRICATION

What happens if a faculty member thinks I committed a violation? Ask - your faculty member to provide you information about the allegation Consult / Meet - with the AI staff to discuss your rights & responsibilities Understand - what your options are in relation to the process – review the “Code of Academic Integrity” Sign/Submit - the documentation to your faculty or to AI staff detailing how you would like to proceed Participate - actively in any meetings or hearing

Non-Academic Student Misconduct Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities (SRR) Addresses incidents of minor or moderate non-academic student misconduct, which may result in an administrative record or a disciplinary record Addresses significant non-academic student misconduct which may lead to Loss of Housing, Suspension, or Expulsion through formal disciplinary hearings Two Important Take Homes: Alcohol Medical Amnesty Program “Good Samaritan” Policy

Some common examples of non-academic misconduct Possession or use of alcohol under the age of 21 Intoxication of students either on or off campus, regardless of age Possession and/or use of marijuana or other illegal drugs and controlled substances Relational Behaviors (ex. Disorderly Conduct, Harassment) Arguing between Roommates or Friends Sending disorderly statements via , text message, Facebook, etc

Tips for Students Use SRR and AI as a source of information about University policies Be knowledgeable about university policies – Read the “ Codes” at If you are an international student, be knowledge about how the laws of the United States differs than the laws of your home country Be comfortable talking about your living expectations with your roommates. If living off campus, be mindful of your neighbors when having guests over Make positive decisions for yourself both inside and outside of the classroom Find a support network to help you navigate the academic and social climate surrounding the University Be a positive influence in our community, both on campus and off campus
