Ten Thousand Islands –Located in the northwest quadrant of the park –Islands are one fifth of the National Park –Name of islands are called Royal Palm, Flamingo, and Gumbo Limbo Trail –Covers 1,400,533 acres on the southwest. Tree Island –Some of the trees are mangroves –Clusters of trees form Florida Bay River of Grass

Over 4,000 years ago many settlers lived in the Everglades.

Culture Details Tequesta and Calusa – 1 st settlers – Lived 4,000 years ago Spanish explorers –early 1500’s searching for gold –Set up missions to convert Indians to Christianity Seminole Indians –1800 lived in the area –forced to leave by Spanish or they would become slaves

The Everglades takes up 5,000 miles that is why it is one of the largest swamp areas in the world.

Waterway Details Swamps –Big Cypress Swamp –40 miles wide, 100 miles long, 3 inches deep Canals Canals flow through Lake Okeechobee 12’0’’(3.66m) Rivers One of the rivers is called Shark River Chickee.

Rocks and Minerals There is Limestone and Sand at the bottom of the Everglades.

Rocks and Mineral Details Limestone –Limestone is the most found Mineral in the Everglades. Sand The Everglades has the tiniest bit of sand in it. Sand and Rocks Limestone and a little bits of Sand is at the bottom of the Everglades.
