Penicillin: The Wonder Drug By: Nichole Dunn

General Info You Might Not Have Known  Penicillin is the excretion of the mold first found on bread  Ernest Duchesne was the first one to notice penicillin, but Alexander Fleming got the credit for the discovery of Penicillin  Penicillin actually works by prohibiting the bacterial cells to go through the process mitosis

Howard Florey  Alexander Fleming might have gotten the credit for the discovery, Howard Florey deserves the honor because he and his team developed it  Florey came across Fleming’s paper on it, and decided it might be something important, and that’s how they started it

Health S(L)ide  Penicillin treats only bacterial infections  The first person that was treated with Penicillin made a remarkable recovery, unfortunately they ran out of usable penicillin and he died a few days later

Some Treatments Some diseases might include:  Ear Infections  Strep Throat  Infections of many kinds  Tonsillitis  Pneumonia  Bronchitis  Several species of Staphylococcus

Penicillin Mold Spore

Industry  In 1943 a moldy cantaloupe was found to have the best penicillin yet to be found  Some time later, someone noticed that corn steep liquor (at the time considered a waste) also gave a high quality Penicillin cheaper  They were frantic to figure out how to industrialize the penicillin, because of World War 2

Health Uses from the 40’s till now  Now there are over 50 strains of the penicillin  A lot of them are synthetic because some people have built up a resistance to penicillin and some people are allergic to it  Since there are so many different kinds of Penicillin and different medicines, some people don’t take it

Industry from the 40’s till now  In a way the industry of penicillin has slowed because there are so many different treatments available to us  In the beginning, Penicillin was rare, and not many people had the options to take it, so their main goal was to industrialize it so that soldiers and the common people could take it
