Lesson 5-3 Pages Simplifying Fractions

What you will learn! How to write fractions in simplest form.

Equivalent fractions Simplest form

What you really need to know! Fractions that have the same value are called equivalent fractions. A fraction is in simplest form when the GCF of the numerator and denominator is 1.

12 45 Example 1: Write in simplest form:=

40 60 Example 2: Write in simplest form:=

Example 3: Two notes form a perfect fifth if the simplified fraction of the frequencies of the notes equals ¾. If note D = 294 Hertz and note G = 392 Hertz, do they form a perfect fifth?

294 ÷ 2 = 147 ÷ 7 = ÷ 2 = 196 ÷ 7 = ÷ 7 = 3 28 ÷ 7 = 4 Yes. It is a perfect fifth!
