CHEST Report to JIBS 1 June 1998

Web of Science ISI offering Web of Science (WoS) from USA, with dedicated bandwidth no concurrent user limitation sized to meet expected expansion over the agreement period Athens or Athens gateway backdata same as current service

Web of Science ( 2) Usage statistics ( as yet undefined ) to be available to each institution No telnet access Current Contents a separate product ( although the data is there ) No ISTP yet Links to other resources ( eg full text ) likely to be via XML and not Z39.50 Link to a national local holdings file possible

Possible agreement Announcement September 98 Agreement signed December 98 Service start March 99 Trial service prior to service start Current agreement ends March 2000 Services in parallel March 99 to March 00

Possible agreement Pricing Standard list price is $70,000 pa for an institution, unlimited usage Current agreement price is £7500 pa + VAT = £8225 WoS would be VAT free

Possible pricing Pricing options: –dependent on institution size –fixed, or (known) annual increments –include/exclude Current Contents price increases likely to be in the order of –25% for WoS –55% for WoS + Current Contents On average, and allowing for VAT

Alternatives Run WoS at a Datacentre Run the ISI data with our own interface at a Datacentre –ISI is not making these options financially attactive Build our own equivalent Do without

AlfI We have the coverage, but its variable –index only –abstracts –full text –inconsistent formats JISC planning to fund a feasibility study

Pros Under UK HE control Provide a uniform entry into all JISC datasets Could provide extensive linkage to other resources and local holdings Low cost

Cons Not ISI Would lack citation searching etc Institutions would see material only from those databases to which they subscribed
