TCP/IP Performance under TIA 921A Impairments Les Wu August 2010

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent | TIA 30.3 Contribution | August 2010 Motivation and Caveats Much video, especially over-the-top video is carried by TCP. Given this, one is interested in the theoretic performance of TCP under a particular network condition. Given this, a set of measurements has been made using “iperf” using an Anue impairment generator across the TIA 921a impairment suite. Note: The results presented here are considered preliminary. There are some missing test cases and the tests need to be re-run and validated. This submission will be updated in the future after these runs have been completed.

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent | TIA 30.3 Contribution | August 2010 iperf   Iperf was developed by NLANR/DAST as a modern alternative for measuring maximum TCP and UDP bandwidth performance. Iperf allows the tuning of various parameters and UDP characteristics. Iperf reports bandwidth, delay jitter, datagram loss.  Requires both a server as well as client to run  Sample Output (test case 164A): Client connecting to , TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 64.0 KByte (default) [ 3] local port connected with port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] sec 24.2 MBytes 6.77 Mbits/sec

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent | TIA 30.3 Contribution | August 2010 Test Setup  iperf v2.0.5 server run on a Linux server box  iperf v2.0.5 client run on a WinXP box  Anue Systems GEM Network Emulator used to generate impairments  All interconnections and switch 1GbE  30s iperf test run:  iperf -t30 -l c  With no impairments, TCP test results on the order of Mbit.

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent | TIA 30.3 Contribution | August 2010 TCP Test Result Performance Distribution  58% of A Profile test cases only support TCP bandwidth below 500kbit  2 Mbit  If these results are confirmed, this suggests the limitatiosn of TIA-921A cases for practical video transport
