Outcomes of the American Revolution U.S. History

The End of the Revolutionary War After a long ( ), and hard-fought war on both sides, General Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. This marked the end of the Revolutionary War. 25,000 Revolutionaries dead ▫8,000 killed in battle, 17,000 died of disease. 8,500 to 25,000 wounded

The Treaty of Paris Treaty= an agreement between two or more countries, usually to end a conflict. Agreement between Great Britain and the Colonists (now the United States). Recognized American independence. Added additional territory to the United States.

Land Change

Who benefited? Who didn’t? BenefitedDidn’t Benefit Wealthy white patriots ▫Became powerful leaders ▫Presidents Other white men who fought in the war ▫Right to vote ▫More of a voice Loyalists Native Americans African Americans Women

Impact on African Americans 5,000 African Americans served in Patriot militias. Why? Thousands more fought for the British. Why? Many claimed that slavery contradicted Revolutionary ideals. Emancipation slowly begins in the North, since slavery is not very important there. Some sold their slaves to the South, where slavery was expanding.

Impact on Women ▫Won “respect,” but no political or legal rights ▫Invisible, according to Zinn ▫Role of women is that of mothers, to raise virtuous citizens for the new country.

“All Men are Created Equal…” This phrase would become extremely important over the next 85 years: Does it include… ▫Poor people? ▫Slaves? ▫Women? ▫Native American? ▫Immigrants?

Up next… During our next unit, we will examine the creation of government in the United States and the development of the United States Constitution. This unit will culminate with the Constitution exam, needed for graduation.
