What is the Academy? The Academy of Management mission is to enhance the profession of management by advancing the scholarship of management and enriching the professional development of its members. –Annual meetings, journals, and career services Founded in 1936 by two professors, the Academy of Management is the oldest and largest scholarly management association in the world. Today, the Academy is the professional home to 18,000 members from 95 nations.

Academy of Management Governance The Academy of Management is a member-driven association governed by a volunteer and elected Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is connected to 24 divisions and interest groups, governed by their own elected officers; the divisions carry out much of the association’s work. The President of the Academy appoints committees and task forces to handle new business, undertake projects, and manage specific services such as placement, exhibits and newsletters. Committees, journal editors, task forces, and the divisions and interest groups are connected to the Board of Governors through Board liaisons and Board members.

24 Divisions and Interest Groups Business Policy & Management Careers Conflict Management Critical Management Studies Entrepreneurship Gender & Diversity in Organizations Health Care Management Human Resources International Management Management Consulting Management Education & Development Management History Management, Spirituality and Religion Managerial and Organizational Cognition Operations Management Organization & Management Theory Organization Development & Change Organizational Behavior Organizational Communications & Information Systems Organizations & The Natural Environment Public & Nonprofit Research Methods Social Issues in Management Technology & Innovation Management

Journals Academy of Management Journal – Duane Ireland, Texas A&M University Original empirical studies Academy of Management Review – Martin Kilduff, UT-Austin; Amy Hillman, ASU New theoretical models and frameworks Academy of Management Learning and Education – James Bailey, GWU; Ben Arbaugh, U. of Wisconsin – Oshkosh Empirical papers and reviews dealing with learning and education Academy of Management Perspectives – Peter Cappelli, Wharton; Garry Bruton, TCU All types of papers that have a clear applied message for managers and thought leaders

Meetings The Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, held each year in August, is the largest annual gathering of management scholars in the world. Attended by more than 7,500 people, the meeting provides a forum for sharing research and expertise in all management disciplines through invited and competitive paper sessions, panels, symposia, workshops, distinguished speakers, and special programs for doctoral students. Next Meetings: Chicago, 2009 Montreal, 2010

Navigating the program Professional Development Workshops, Friday - Sunday (non-refereed) –Invited and public sessions Academy Scholarly program, Monday - Wednesday (refereed) –Types of sessions Refereed paper sessions Symposium Caucuses Business Meetings and Social hours

But This Will Change in 2009 (Chicago) Tentatively, the schedule for the meetings will change to a Friday – Tuesday format Professional Development Workshops (non- refereed) will be scheduled on Friday and Saturday Sunday will begin with an All Academy Welcome and breakfast (including a Presidential Address). The rest of the day will be devoted to PDWs, Symposia and Showcase Sessions focusing on the meeting theme. Academy Scholarly program (refereed) will be scheduled all day Monday and Tuesday, with a Closing Reception on Tuesday evening

Refereed paper sessions Interactive Paper (IP) sessions are round table discussions with authors, where each Division Program Chair identifies innovative papers best discussed in this format. Paper Presentation (PP) sessions are constructed by the Division Program Chair out of those accepted papers not included in either IP sessions. –Organized sessions – 4 papers with discussant/chair –Visual Village (poster presentations)

Types of Sessions (continued) Refereed division symposia –Singly sponsored –Jointly sponsored Other sessions –All Academy symposia – emphasize the annual meeting theme –Showcase symposia – nominated by at least 2 divisions –Academy Caucuses

Some Other Things You Should Know The Rule of Three No one can have his or her name on more than THREE regular submissions to the meetings Violators will be asked WHICH SUBMISSION SHOULD BE WITHDRAWN (serious consequences) Why do we have the rule? How do people violate the rule? Why not just take the person’s name off the submission?

More You Should Know Symposia have a greater chance of being accepted than do regular papers Why? “Names” draw audience SO? There are no “second class” sessions at the meetings Visual Presentations or posters are NOT presentations rated as being of lower quality Explain

How Can You Benefit Most? Submit papers –Papers are blind reviewed so you are judged on the basis of your work Try organizing a symposium –People are flattered to be asked to participate Volunteer to Review Attend sessions –Ask questions of presenters –Go to “posters” and discuss the papers there with authors –Don’t try to impress people BUT join the discussion

What This Will Get You Professional development: Improve research, teaching and service skills Expand your knowledge by participating in competitive sessions Test and refine your ideas by submitting your work Build social networks Make friends Have fun!
