Presentation transcript:

Standards 6-8 LS1D Both plant and animal cells must carry on life functions, so they have parts in common such as nuclei, cytoplasm, cell membrane, and mitochondria. But plants have specialized cell parts, such as chloroplasts for photosynthesis and cell walls, which provide plants their overall structure. Students will be able to… Use labeled diagrams or models to illustrate similarities and differences between plant and animal cell structures and describe their functions (e.g. both have nuclei, sytoplasm, cell membrane, and mitochondria while only plants have chloroplasts and cell walls

Warm-Up What is cellophane made of? Plant fiber called cellulose which has been aged and shredded.

Today’s Goal Predict: What are we going to learn today? Hint: Look at the standards and posters in the room Goal: To compare animal and plant cells to see their similarities and differences.

Plant Cell Functions Cell Part (Organelles)Cell Function Cell WallProvides structure and rigidity to plant cells, contains cellulose ChloroplastUsed in photosynthesis to give plants energy from sunlight VacuoleStores and eliminates things within the cell, regulates cell pressure NucleusContains all the genetic info to run a cell, makes ribosomes Endoplasmic ReticulumHelps transport things throughout the cell RibosomesSynthesizes/makes proteins MitochondriaMakes energy for the cell (ATP) Golgi ApparatusMakes and packages molecules for leaving the cell Cell MembraneProvides Form to cells and controls passage of materials into and out of the cell Add the first three in your journal!

Plant Cell Vacuole Mitochondria Nucleus ER Golgi Apparatus Cell Membrane Chloroplast Cell Wall Ribosomes

Cell Similarities All cells have… -Cell membrane -Cytoplasm -DNA -Some organelles Plant and Animal cells have… -Cell membrane -Mitochondria -ER and Ribosomes -Golgi Apparatus -Nucleus -Cytoplasm On your cell pictures color the organelles unique to plant cells green, color organelles that plant and animal cells share purple.

Cell Standards Time to fill them in… Exit Pass: To leave class, you need to get your standards sheet signed off by me
