National Grid’s Commitment to STEM Marcy L. Reed President, Massachusetts August 5, 2013

Energy 2030 What is it and what does it mean? What?Double energy productivity in the US by 2030 by cutting in half the energy we waste How? Stay at the top of global innovation; increase use of clean, renewable energy sources Why? To make our world a better place to live When? Now and over the next 17 years Who? We can all help shape the future of energy

How is National Grid helping? Supporting Energy 2030 through STEM  We depend on engineers to help shape the future of energy  There is a shortage of engineers entering the workforce  So, we’re preparing today for tomorrow’s engineering workforce by investing in STEM  Investing in STEM is a social responsibility and starts with early education  Sometimes, the best classrooms are outside of school

Let me show you what energy means to me…  Developing energy conservation strategies hands –on  How to make a wind-vane  Chocolate chip cookie mining  Hosting annual Earth Day t-shirt design contest  Pre-K across our footprint  $50K investment Green Education Foundation

Let me feel what energy is…  Corporate sponsor: Teacher Resource Center & Teacher Services Program  Reaching over 3,500 educators through a combination of programs  Reaching countless pre- school age children  Two-year $150K partnership New England Aquarium

Help me explore energy with my family…  Providing STEM teaching kits and training to reach 12,500 families in Massachusetts  Supporting professional development for teachers in grades 1-5  Hosting annual National Grid STEM night for teachers and students  Two-year $80K partnership Boston Children’s Museum

Help me to embrace the unknown…  Sponsor: EarthWorks!  Understanding the environment  Thinking about the impact of our everyday choices Brooklyn Children’s Museum

Give me time to think things through…  Sponsor: ThinkSpace  Inviting young visitors to explore, imagine, create and experiment with spatial thinking  Offering hands-on play for powerful problem-solving Providence Children’s Museum

STEM for life Inspire – Encourage – Role model Getting today’s children excited about STEM creates a brighter future for us all.
