Census of Marine Life (CoML) A 10-year effort to increase our knowledge and understanding of the Diversity, Distribution & Abundance of Marine Life – Past, Present & Future (1 st Major Report 2010)

CoML is a Global Program Over 2000 Participants from 80 Countries all over the World!! CoML consists of: 14 Field Projects OBIS (database) HMAP (History) FMAP (Modeling) 12 NRICs Mission: To assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life in the oceans -- past, present, and future.

Promote CoML and its biodiversity research value  Sustain US CoML program beyond 2010  OBIS to support US science, management and education needs CoML in the United States

Approaches for Researching the Roles of Marine and Coastal Biodiversity in Maintaining Ecosystem Services September 11-13, 2006 Washington, DC Objective: To improve understanding of marine and coastal biodiversity and the application of this knowledge to support sustainable and adaptive ecosystem- based management of living and nonliving resources. CoML 2006 Biodiversity Workshop Sponsored By:

Results and Conclusions What Do We Measure, Why, and How? Biodiversity really matters to people’s way of life --- it makes a difference to real people Biodiversity really matters to people’s way of life --- it makes a difference to real people If we manage for biodiversity, we’ll in effect manage for sustainable ecosystems and ecosystem services If we manage for biodiversity, we’ll in effect manage for sustainable ecosystems and ecosystem services. We need to apply new technologies, but need some old ones too – esp. taxonomy and comprehensive observations of life history. We need to apply new technologies, but need some old ones too – esp. taxonomy and comprehensive observations of life history We need to connect to observatories We need to connect to observatories Full Report and interactive CD NOW available!!
