Intel IT Overlay Jeff Sedayao PlanetLab Workshop at HPLABS May 11, 2006

Distributed Virtual Machines2 Intel IT Overlay What we are trying to do Some key differences from the public PlanetLab How we are going about it Issues and considerations Current State

Distributed Virtual Machines3 What we are trying to do PlanetLab has demonstrated the utility of being able to allocate virtual machines at the location of choice Key Questions: –How would enterprise IT departments use this capability? –What obstacles would get in the way? –How can avoid those obstacles? Some other goals: –Demonstrate the business value of virtualization, particularly with Intel’s VT technology

Distributed Virtual Machines4 Some Key Differences from the Public PlanetLab Initially contained completely within Intel’s Firewalls –No direct contact with Internet –A later goal is to research ways to federate with Internet-based PlanetLabs Enterprise focus A key consideration is the need to run different OS –Different Linux distributions –Different Linux versions –Windows™

Distributed Virtual Machines5 How we are going about it Two physical servers at a variety of sites within Intel PlanetLab Central to drive creation of virtual machines –We want to leverage the interfaces, APIs, and other tools already implemented –PlanetLab is a working platform for location sensitive computing Xen domains instead of vservers –We’ll need to change node manager –Need to rethink the way we update user keys

Distributed Virtual Machines6 Issues and considerations (from Marc’s note) Resource sharing/Federation: Later goal AUP: use general corporate guidelines for internal computer system use –Need to incorporate audit trails for Xen Domain network usage - some work already done here

Distributed Virtual Machines7 Current State Servers deployed in 4 sites –Mostly on West Coast –One site to land on East Coast –PLC built (but not yet using myPLC) Presently trying to make NodeManager work with Xen Use Cases we are looking at: –Security monitoring –Network monitoring –Content distribution –Distributed computation
