FACERISIC Unscramble the word above to work out the theme of today’s lesson…

“Pay it Forward” Lesson ? Learning Objectives To be able to: Explore why sacrifices were used in the Old Testament as a way of atoning for sin. Examine reasons why Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice who stopped the need for animals to be killed.

Sacrifice means giving something up or offering something as payment (often to a god).

Give up your seat for someone?

Give up chocolate cake for Lent?

First place in a race with youngsters?

Your life for others?

What would you be prepared to sacrifice for the following? To say sorry for doing something wrong. To save your pet from dying. To save your mum from a serious illness. To save the world from destruction by terrorists.

Copy down the following key terms with their definitions: Sacrificial – Something which is offered up to a deity (god) as a sacrifice. Atonement – Reconciliation or making up when you have done something wrong. Forgiveness – Act of excusing someone who has made a mistake or done wrong.

Jesus crucified Compare Abraham’s willingness to Sacrifice his son, Isaac

Read Genesis 22:1-19 as a class and answer the following questions in full sentences: 1.Why did God tell Abraham to offer up his only son as a sacrifice? 2.Why does the angel stop Abraham? 3.What does Abraham sacrifice instead? 4.Why do you think that animals were killed in order to ask God for forgiveness?

Watch the remaining 20 mins of the film.

Plenary Discussion Question: How does sacrifice link to Pay it forward? Salvador Dali: ‘Christ of Saint John of the Cross’ Why do you think the painter has chosen this angle to depict the crucifixion? Why has Mimi Leder (director of Pay It Forward) chosen to use the same angle?
