Palimony This is a contract that is formed between a married couple that requires monetary payments in the case of a break up However, if there is no formal legal relationship, then there is no requirement for palimony

Cohabitation Some couples do not marry, and instead cohabitate While the divorce rate in the U.S. is at about 50%, those who cohabitate have a far less chance of having a successful relationship (about 85% of these fail)

Cohabitation Some couples do not marry, and instead cohabitate They can form a cohabitation agreement which is a written or oral agreement that outlines how they want to deal with their money,property, and responsibilities

Marvin v. Marvin (1976) California Supreme Court declared that cohabitation agreements can be enforced between unwed couples, meaning that unwed couples had similar rights to property as wed couples
