Overview & Status of the Middleware & EGI Core Proposals Steven Newhouse Interim EGI Director EGEE Technical Director 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

A Sustainable European Grid A single proposal from EGI.eu & NGIs for DCI calls /.2 – Establishing a coordinating body EGI.eu Governed by a Council comprising NGIs and EIROForum members (CERN…) – Operational integration of established NGIs And other international resource providers – Support of services for existing communities heavily using the grid infrastructure (HEP, Life Sciences, …) User communities organized in Specialized Support Centres (SSC) and centred typically by scientific domain. Transition to a sustainable infrastructure while ensuring continuity for existing user communities 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

Project Activity A governance structure with its major stakeholders –NGIs, Research Communities, Research Labs,... Deliver a consistent, high-quality supported service –Support across its federated NGI infrastructure A scalable user support model for e-infrastructure –European research communities to connect with their international collaborators Coordination between multiple software providers –Full service interoperability through standards adoption –In Europe and with other International e-infrastructures Secure the support and maintenance of key software –To meet the needs of the operations & user community 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

Relationship with other EU Projects EGI.eu OperationsMain SSCMiddleware CHAINOther ‘SSC’OGF-Europe IIOther EU Projects 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

Example Collaborating Proposals Software project(s): – Immediate maintenance of middleware currently in production – Development of middleware enhancements to meet new user needs – Collaborating with ‘research projects’ to deliver long-term enhancements – Facilitating standards development within the DCI community SSC project(s) – Dissemination and awareness within broader DCI community – Support for new user communities: training & application porting – Development of higher-level services and application tools – Instantiation and development of science gateways for end-users – SSCs for application communities Need a political & technical binding between these projects – Formal relationship with SLA, SLD, MoU, letters of support, … 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

Current Editorial Team Steven Newhouse Laura Perini Cal Loomis Dieter Kranzlmueller John Gordon Fotis Karagiannis Ludek Matyska 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

Plan to Develop a Proposal Proposal Outline – WP scope and provide a budget breakdown Input from NGI’s on International Task activity – Scope of tasks from an NGI perspective Bidding process for hosting Global Tasks – Two stage process to assess bids from NGIs 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

Timeline July 1 st : – First deadline for signing the EGI MoU July 9 th : – First EGI Council Meeting – Approval of proposal process September 22 nd : – Sessions on EGI Proposal at EGEE’09 November 24 th : – Submit final project proposal 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009 EGI Council:13 Countries

The European Middleware Initiative (EMI) - Empowering EGI ARC, gLite & UNICORE Consortia 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

EMI Goals Being the middleware source for EGI and other DCIs Harmonising the three middleware technologies – One middleware distribution at the end of the project – Providing reference implementations of key components Support EGI MU in their transition & bootstrap phase Strengthen EMI collaboration between EGI.eu & SSCs Strengthen the European position in the middleware provision worldwide 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

Core EMI Activity Maintenance of European middleware to be used in EGI – Current base line is middleware in production use Bulk of which comes from ARC, gLite, UNICORE – Open to other complementary components (and partners) Harmonisation of European middleware technologies – Rationalisation of components Exploit synergies between the projects Remove redundant components through migration plans – Ensuring interoperability between solutions, using common open standards Developing new or updating existing standards where needed – Reduce the overall maintenance burden 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009

Supporting EMI Activity Quality Assurance – Triage, Prioritisation & Maintenance Documentation, Training the Trainers and Dissemination Standards engagement – Specifications and conformance testing Outreach – Collaboration with other middleware solutions within and outside Europe – Close links to scientific communities & NGIs Development – Invest in development work using saved maintenance effort 26/05/2016 Status of EGI & Middleware proposals - July 2009
