Global ocean, atmosphere and land surface models are developed as components of assimilation and forecast systems as well as for addressing the weather and climate research questions. The GEOS-5 data assimilation system (DAS) is based on the GEOS-5 Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM) integrated with the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) Analysis. Introduction to 610.1/GMAO & GEOS-5 GESDIS Staff - August, Focus of the presentation: Introduce GESDIS staff to the GEOS-5 production at a high level and the collaboration between GES DISC and GMAO for the end-to-end GEOS-5 production operations

GMAO Products Page:

GEOS-5 Data Assimilation GESDIS Staff - August, GEOS-5 integrates the observations and models to produce the best representation of the atmospheric state GEOS-5 covers the entire globe with physically consistent data

GEOS-5 Data Assimilation Schematic GESDIS Staff - August, 20105

Production Streams GESDIS Staff - August, Near Real Time (NRT): Assimilation products (DAS), Forecasts ( Reprocessing for Instrument Teams Long-term re-analysis: MERRA Customized products: - CERES team: uses controlled set of input obs to minimize data shock when a new data type is introduced in the mid-stream - YOTC

The next version, v5.6.2, will be in HDF-5 at ¼ deg.

GEOS-5 Data Users GESDIS Staff - August, EOS Instrument Teams: CERES, MLS, TES, CALIPSO, MODIS/Land Science Support: GMI-CTM, GEOS-CHEM (Harvard), U of MD, … Other Projects: GEWEX/CEOP, POWER, FLASHFlux, SRB, YOTC, GLDAS, Flood Warning, SPARC-IPY, JAXA/SMILES, … Field Experiments: Recently ARCTAS, TIGERZ-II, HIPPO, GloPac, GRIP (Aug, 2010) General Users of MERRA products at GES DISC/MDISC

Input Observations for NRT Production GESDIS Staff - August, Most of the input data for NRT are obtained via GES DISC. Some of the input data for non –real time use are obtained directly from other sources such RSS, ECMWF, NCAR, … All the input data are in BUFR format Currently working with NRT AIRS data team at GES DISC to acquire AIRS radiance data from LANCE. Data Processing GESDIS Staff - August, Processing done using HEC resources at NCCS - Uses queues of sizes ranging from 144-cpu (1/2 deg) to 720-cpu (1/4 deg) on the NCCS ‘discover’ system - GCM performance scales well as the number of CPUs is increased, but less so with GSI - Throughput: 6dd/d – 10dd/d, 30dd/d desired (MERRA: 10dd/d) (On the average, GEOS-5 system is upgraded once a year) - High throughtput vs high spatial resolution * NRT production timeline Z L 7pm 1am 7am 1pm 7pm Data 18z 0z 6z 12z 0Z 5-day Fcst 6Z DAS Post Proc 18Z DAS Post Proc 0Z DAS Post Proc 12Z DAS Post Proc 12Z 5-day Fcst AIRS GDAS AIRS GDAS AIRS GDAS AIRS GDAS

Quality Assurance GESDIS Staff - August, Online QA - Input observations are screened before the analysis - Output QC by QuADS (range check, hydrostatic check,..) Offline product quality assessment - Monitoring meeting held weekly - Various analysis and monitoring tools are developed and used E.g., OBS2HTML diagrams, forecast skill scores, O-F and O-A stats, comparison with data from other centers (NCEP, ECMWF,..)

Data Distribution GESDIS Staff - August, NRT data and MERRA via GES DISC - NRT data distributed to subscribed users after predefined subsetting. - MERRA: On web-based online data system with various tools for data search and order (Mirador), subsetting, data transport (ftp, openDAP, GDS), visualization (Giovanni). MERRA user metrics ( show that data are being accessed by users from over the globe at a steady rate. - mdisc: NCCS data portal for mission support and science collaborators - Forecasts as well as assimilation products are made available for mission support - Data retained online for 6 months - GRIP mission support page:
