eGY, Polar Research Board Meeting 5 May 2005 Vision The contribution of Geoscience to the benefit of humanity is given a forward impetus as did IGY fifty years ago. –eGY promotes a revolution in geoscientific data availability and access worldwide. –Education in the geosciences alerts the public to the excitement and life-sustaining role of our planet and its space environment.

eGY, Polar Research Board Meeting 5 May 2005 There are many implementations of the Late 20 th Century data architecture and more and more 21 st century architecture implementations available for isolated sub-disciplines. They are called by many different names –Virtual Observatories, Data and Information Networks, --- The next few pages list a few implementations. Each community is very pleased with the significant advances they have made! Interoperability between these implementations is, at best, an afterthought.

We have had preliminary discussions with Mark Parsons, of IPY DIS and will continue them over the next few weeks to develop a strategy that addresses the visions and realities of eGY, IPY DIS, IPY, and the 13 other IPY data related programs currently identified.
