that are MALE originate here at the forehead. All signs that are MALE originate here at the forehead. MALE, BOY, FATHER, MAN, GRANDFATHER, UNCLE, NEPHEW, MALE COUSIN, BROTHER, FEMALE All signs that are FEMALE originate here at the chin. FEMALE, GIRL, MOTHER, WOMAN, GRANDMOTHER, AUNT, NIECE, FEMALE COUSIN, SISTER

Perhaps you are curious WHY? Sometimes knowing the reason a sign looks the way it does, helps you remember it. Remember when the first school for the Deaf was established? In 1817 In 1817 — women (or even girls for that matter) did not EVER go out without wearing theirBONNETS!

ribbon Sign for GIRL, FEMALE comes from the ribbon on the bonnet. Dominant hand “A” shape- thumb draws a ribbon down the chin.

At the same time… In 1817 In 1817 — men did not go out in public either without wearing their… HATS! HATS! When a man met a lady on the street the polite thing to do was always…

Tip his hat to her. So the sign for MALE is a variation of a man tipping his hat to greet a female in public.

Ladies and Gentlemen with manners. MALE + POLITE became MAN FEMALE + POLITE became WOMAN

MALE, BOY, FATHER, MAN, GRANDFATHER, UNCLE, NEPHEW, MALE COUSIN, BROTHER, STEP BROTHER FEMALE, GIRL, MOTHER, WOMAN, GRANDMOTHER, AUNT, NIECE, FEMALE COUSIN, SISTER, STEP SISTER Let’s try signing them…Watch as I model the signs.

Vocabulary Review Vocabulary Review link link Vocabulary Review link ABC Lesson 2 Here is all the vocabulary for ABC Lesson 2. Let’s take a look at what you may already know and learn the signs you do not know yet.

Changing Personal to Possessive Sign each of the Personal Pronouns and then its Possessive Pronoun counterpart. EXAMPLE: EXAMPLE: I ~ MY 1.SHE ~ HERS 7. ME ~ MINE 2.YOU ~ YOURS 6. IT ~ ITS 3.WE ~ OURS 8. THEY ~ THEIR 4.HE ~ HIS 9. HIM ~ HIS 5. YOU-pl ~ YOURS 10. THEM ~ THEIRS

Sentence Structure: The basic sentence structure used in simple sentences in ASL, commonly have a repeated pronoun at the end. B. SHE STUDENT SHE.‘She is a student.’ C. MY MOTHER SHE. ‘She is my mother.’

Follow the examples given, changing them to use the repeated pronoun: SHE MY SISTER SHE HE MY BROTHER HE HE YOUR FATHER HE HE OUR FATHER HE SHE MY GRANDMOTHER SHE HE MY FRIEND HE HE YOUR GRANDFATHER HE SHE YOUR TEACHER SHE SHE MY STUDENT SHE HE MY FRIEND HE HE BOY HE SHE GIRL SHE HE MAN HE SHE WOMAN SHE Change the following sentences ~ by adding a repeated pronoun at the end of each sentence. Practice these sentences as well. Be ready to sign them for the class.

Another common form… …of sentences used in ASL is the use of Third Person Pronouns: When pronouns are used in a sentence to refer to use the space around you. When pronouns are used in a sentence to refer to _______________________ use the space around you. If the persons are not present, the signer can refer to one person on one side and the other on the opposite side.

CHANGE the following examples. Add a 1 st & 3 rd person pronoun to form a new sentence. (Remember to separate – by using space around you.) SHE IS HER SISTER. SHE IS THEIR TEACHER. SHE IS HER MOTHER. SHE IS HER FRIEND. SHE IS HIS GRANDMOTHER. SHE IS HIS STUDENT. HE IS HIS FATHER. HE IS HER BROTHER. SHE IS HIS SISTER. HE IS HER GRANDFATHER. Change the following sentences ~ by using a third person pronoun and space. Practice all ten sentences. Be ready to sign them for the class. Change each using pronouns as shown:

ACTIVITY : Sit in a group of 4, facing your partner across from you as shown. PartnersPartners You will only sign to your partner sitting across from you. Try to NOT look at or sign to the people on either side of you. But you WILL be talking about them… ALL SET?
