Integrative Mapping Strategies Jeremy Bixby WLIA 2013 Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Systems Integration Video

Takeaway #1 Integrative apps create value, thus increasing ROI. 3 ways: – Increases the lifespan of app – Get more out of existing enterprise applications – Optimizes processes by eliminating work overlap

Takeaway #2 Resource utilizations are optimized when technology enhances and allows business processes to optimize. 3 ways: – Reduces workload – Accomplish more with less – Enables staff with more and better data, faster

Takeaway #3 Customers/Citizens expect superior, exciting mobile experiences. 3 ways: – Standard and stylized UI INCLUDING basemaps – Integrate UI with organizational branding strategy – Create emotional connection with end user

NOT Integrative Asset Management PermittingGIS IT Infrastructure

Integration Architecture Asset Management Permitting GIS Internet, intranets IT Infrastructure

ROI ROI = (value – investment)/investment How to increase ROI? – Decrease investment – Increase value – Some combination

Decrease Investment Not a bad strategy – Esri FlexViewer – Esri app templates – ArcGIS Online – GeoMoose/Open Source Derives value from content, not delivery – Access to layers – Access to tools

Increase Value How much do users “get” out of it? Focus on answering 3 key questions: – Is it useful? – Is it usable? – Is it desirable? User Experience

Is it useful? It is useful to me. It meets my needs. Strategy – Build consensus, get buy-in Have stakeholder meetings – Figure out what “useful” means – Involve ALL of the stakeholders Enterprise software systems that overlap? Identify areas for process improvement through technology

Example: Usefulness Internet, intranets CRM Software Web API -Assigns Requests to correct Staff -Notifies staff of request -Returns updates to device as they are entered -Writes submitted image to correct field and web server

Phase 2: Asset Management Internet, intranets CRM Software Web API -Insert correct SR data to both CRM and AM -Retrieves work updates from work performed by crews in AM Asset Management Database

Is it usable? I am able to use the product easily Use a common basemap across all web apps Worry about your server’s performance: – Is it slow to respond to requests? – RDBMS, AGS, SDE on one server? – Is the server old? – Consider switching out to a cloud-based solution ArcGIS Online ($2500 per year) Google Maps Engine ($20,000 per year!)

Is it desirable? “I like the way the product looks and feels” - Nielsen “Dopamine” or “emotional” – Forrester Strategy – Optimize the app design’s “beauty.” – Are the icons optimized for the interface? Retina for iOS devices? – Is there a branded splash screen?

Is it desirable? Is the app branded with organizational assets? Is the basemap beautiful?

Questions?
