Embrace the Hill Jo-Jo

A/C and Transmission

Hardships bring opportunity To grow, become, trust To see what God will do To show our world the reality Of our Faith

Hardships can bring A desire for escape Hardships can become a Rationalization for choices That lead me away from God

Reasons for Hardships: - You - Them - Life

Dysfunctional Family… 11 Bros and 1 Sis By 4 different mothers 2 of them servants Favoritism

Joseph…punch-line first

You intended it for…? God intended it for…?

Hardships always Contain choices What you do determines Far more than what you know At the time

Joseph has very little choice In what he faces But he does have a choice In how he handles it

Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives… 4 out of 11 Brothers

…and he brought their father a bad report about them

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him

When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him

What did he do To deserve this? Dysfunctional Family

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had…

We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it…"

His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?"

And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said

So he has another one And tells them that one, too!

He (Jacob) said to him (Joseph), "Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me…"

So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him

"Here comes that dreamer!" they said to each other. "Come now, let's kill him…

…and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams"

They strip him of his robe And throw him in The cistern

As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead

Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt

Judah said to his brothers, "What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him…

…after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His brothers agreed

So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern…

…and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt

Goat's blood on the robe Jacob refuses to be comforted

Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard

Hardships always Contain choices What you do determines Far more than what you know At the time

Sold into Slavery= Unfair Hardships bring Choices: - Bitter - Bare minimum - Escape

The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master God's grace on Jo-Jo's choices

When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant

Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned

The LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field

God blessed an Egyptian Military slave-master Because of the presence of One of His people in the house

"God… I hate this job. I hate this group. I hate this…" "God, make me a blessing For your Name's sake"

So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"

Hardships always Contain choices What you do determines Far more than what you know At the time

Hardship also bring The rationalization necessary To do whatever we want

Every reason in the world To take her up on her offer And only one reason to say, "No"

Strength of convictions In advance Or else we fall

But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care"

No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife

How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"

How to Kill Rationalization: See sin as it is Wicked in God's sight And ultimately against God

And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her

One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside

She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!"

Hardships bring Choices

But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house

Hardships always Contain choices What you do determines Far more than what you know At the time

She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. Then she told him this story…

"That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house”

When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger

Doing right in the Midst of hardship may lead to More hardship There's a cost to following God

Don't expect to be rewarded Expect God to be at work And you may not see what God is doing for a long time

Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined

Hardship bring Choices - Sit and mourn - Get angry and curse God - Be faithful & serve where he is

Hardship bring Choices - Be faithful & serve where he is Some of us…quit complaining And start asking God what it Means to be faithful right here

Hardships always Contain choices What you do determines Far more than what you know At the time

But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden

So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there

The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did - Genesis 39

God graced Joseph And it made his enemy's Life easier That's why bitterness Ruins people

They spend so much time Making sure they don't bless The people they're angry with That they miss the blessing God has for them

So it feels like… Nobody notices None of it matters It keeps getting worse God notices…it matters

Because Jo-Jo served well He was put in charge of Potiphar's household Because he was in charge Potiphar's wife took notice

Because Jo-Jo said "Hands off the merchandise" He's in prison Because Jo-Jo served well He's put in charge

Because he's in this position…

Chief cupbearer and baker Have prophetic dreams

When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected

So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, "Why do you look so sad today?"

“We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them”

Hardships bring Choices - "Vacuums to be you" - "Yeah, that's a shame…" - "How can I show you my God?"

Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams”

Cupbearer: Vine and branches Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position

But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison

I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon

When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, "I too had a dream…"

Chief Baker: Baskets and Birds Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh

Pharoah restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand…

…but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation

The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him

Doing right guarantees nothing Except the knowledge that You did something right And it didn't escape God's eyes

The King has a dream No one can interpret The cupbearer remembers Jo-Jo

Hardships always Contain choices What you do determines Far more than what you know At the time

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it”

“I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires” “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires”

Pharoah: Cows and Grain "Seven abundant years Followed by seven years Of extreme famine. So find Someone wise to prepare you"

“Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace…

…and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you" - Genesis 41

13 Lost Years

Clout, Command, Chick

Helps Egypt store up food For the seven years of famine To come People come begging To buy food

Rescues his own family And ensures the Israelite line continues Brings them to live in Egypt 20 years after losing all he knew

When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?"

So they sent word to Joseph, saying, "Your father left these instructions before he died…

'This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly'

Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father" When their message came to him, Joseph wept.

His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. "We are your slaves," they said

Hardships always Contain choices What you do determines Far more than what you know At the time

But Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God?"

Unresolved Bitterness? Understand the difference Between God’s place and yours

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives…

So then, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children" And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them - Genesis 50

Every hardship involved choices And ways to rationalize Doing what's wrong Every hardship gave the choice To do what's right

You have choices Your choices Always have consequences Far beyond What you understand In that moment

What am I facing? What are my choices? Am I rationalizing/excusing? Or doing what I know is right?

Watch what God does When you do what's right

As a church May or may not work out We will do what's right Even- especially- when It isn't easy
