Outer Planets Jupiter and Saturn By: Joyze, Kriel, Krizia

Today Today we will talk about the planets Jupiter, and Saturn.

JUPITER GAS PLANET

Jupiter’s Size No matter how you measure it, Jupiter is bigger than Earth. The size of Jupiter can be measured in 4 different ways: mass, diameter of 143,000 km. The total surface area of Jupiter is 6.22 x 10. Jupiter is the biggest planet in our Solar System. Jupiter’s massive size makes it visible from Earth.

Jupiter’s Position Relative to the Sun Jupiter is the 5 planet from the sun. Jupiter has 7.4 hundred million kilometres from the sun. The planet never goes farther away than 8.2 hundred million kilometres from the sun.

Jupiter’s Orbit Jupiter’s orbit is fairly regular. It’s 0.05 from the circular. About 76 million kilometres separate its nearest and farthest points from the sun. A day on Jupiter is only 10 hours. A year on Jupiter is 4.3 thousand days.

Jupiter’s Moons Jupiter has 63 moons. Since the Roman name for the god Zeus is Jupiter some of it’s moons are named after his wives. The 4 largest moons are Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa. Any moon smaller than Europa is invisible to the human eye. Jupiter's largest moon is Ganymede. Ganymede is larger than Mercury.

The Asteroid Belt Near Jupiter The Asteroid belt is beside Jupiter. The Asteroid belt lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. A few Asteroids have Moons of their own. If all of the Asteroids in the Belt were lumped together, it would be smaller than the Earth’s Moon. One of the largest Asteroid is named Vesta.

The Great Red Spot The Great Red Spot on Jupiter is a huge storm that happened a long time ago. The Great Red Spot is still happening right now. The storm had happened at least for 400 years now. The storm is so big you can put 3 Earths in it! There are other spots but The Great Red is the biggest among all of them.

SATURN GAS PLANET

Saturn’s Size Saturn is much larger than Earth. The diameter of Saturn is 120,536 across its equator. For comparison, this is about 9.4 times the diameter of Earth. The surface area is 4.27x10 square km. This is almost 84 times the surface area has the Earth.

Saturn’s Position Relative to the Sun Saturn is the 6 planet. Saturn has 1.35 billion kilometres from the sun. Saturn has 1.2 billion kilometres to the Earth.

Saturn’s Orbit Saturn’s orbit is fairly irregular. It is 0.06 from the circular. A day on Saturn is less than half a day on Earth. A year on Saturn is 30 times longer than Earth. That is 24,232 Saturn days.

Saturn’s Moons Saturn has 31 known moons. The biggest one is called Titan. Titan is also bigger than Mercury. Saturn has some ice moons. Some moons help Saturn’s rings orbit. Those moons are called Shepherd Moons. If you see the gaps in the rings of Saturn, that’s because the moons block the dust.

The Asteroid belt near Saturn The Asteroid Belt is not near Saturn. Sorry  ……

Saturn’s Rings Saturn’s Rings are made out of rocks, dust, and ice. Some of the pieces could be as small as a grain of salt. Some of the pieces are as big as houses. Some rocks are pieces of moons. Saturn’s gravity gets lots of things and that’s how the rocks are there.

Interesting Facts You can’t walk on gas planets That means you can’t walk on Jupiter, Saturn, etc… There is water, rain and seasons on Titan Saturn’s largest moon. You weigh more in Saturn example if you weigh 70 pounds on Earth you Weigh 74.5 pounds on Saturn. Saturn has methane clouds Greek for Jupiter is Zeus god of lightning Greek for Saturn is Cronus father of Zeus

Satellites The satellites that went on Jupiter are Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, Voyager 1, Voyager 2, Ulysses, Cassini, New Horizon 2 of the satellites that went to Saturn are Voyager 1 and Cassini
