MACHINES

The earliest machines were very simple devices such as a rod to pry a rock out of the ground. Ramps helped the pyramid builders in Egypt raise rocks for buildings. A simple axe would split wood. A spear would kill an animal.

The first machines all had two things in common: 1. They were designed to meet human needs (shelter, food, water, etc.) 2. They all required human or animal power to work.

Advancements in technology lead to the invention of more efficient machines: 1. Water and bucket 2. Water well 3. Mill wheel 4. Archimedes screw 5. Motorized pumps Each time an advancement is made, the goal is to make things EASIER and FASTER

SIMPLE MACHINES A simple machine is any tool or device that is designed for ONE BASIC FUNCTION There are 6 basic simple machines – Lever – Pulley – Inclined Plane – Wheel and Axle – Screw – Wedge

But there are pros and cons to everything: Simple MachinePros (Advantages)Cons (Disadvantages)

HOMEWORK!! 1. Fill in pros and cons chart based on information on pages 262 – 265 in your textbook. 2. Answer Check and Reflect Questions on page 268: 1, 2, 4 You will need to READ THE PAGES in order to complete your homework assignment.
