English and Communication: Listening To Sound and Asking Questions

Listening to sound The different sounds we hear in a film are all very important. If we hear something unusual or out of place we know something strange is happening, eg farm animals in a shopping centre.

Listening to sound There are four types of sound you will hear in a film: 1. music 2. sound effects 3. voices 4. silence. Make a list of sounds you might hear in a film.

Listening to sound What have you written – any of these?

Listening to sound – task You are going to watch the film Little Dinosaurs with the sound turned off – you will only see what happens. After you watch the film you are going to discuss what is happening in it.

Listening to sound Little Dinosaurs 1. What is happening in the film? 2. What are the characters doing? 3. Is it a serious film or a comedy? 4. Does it have a happy or sad ending? 5. What music would you use? 6. What kind of sound effects would you have? 7. What would the dinosaurs voices sound like?

Asking questions If we ask questions about a film it can help us to understand what is happening. This is a very important skill. Its your turn to ask the questions. Try to ask questions starting with these words as youll get better answers: How? Why?Where? Who? When? What?

Asking questions – task You are going to watch Little Dinosaurs again with both the screen and the sound turned on. After you watch it you are going to make up three questions about the film and share them with your partner/group.

Listening to sound – task You are going to watch the film Terrafarmer with the screen turned off – you will only hear what happens. After you watch it you are going to discuss what is happening in the film.

Asking questions Terrafarmer 1. Is the film set indoors or outdoors? 2. Is the film set in the past, present or future? 3. What age are the characters? 4. Whats happening in the film? 5. What are the characters doing? 6. Is this a funny or tragic film? 7. Does it have a happy or sad ending?

Listening to sound – task You are going to watch Terrafarmer again with both the screen and the sound turned on. After you watch it you are going to make up three questions about the film and share them with your partner/group.
