Easter Vigil Mass St Teresa of Avila April 4,2015 8:00 pm

Easter Vigil MassEaster Vigil Mass  The rubrics remind us that this “ mother of all vigils ” is the “ greatest and most noble of all solemnities and it is to be unique in every single Church ” (Roman Missal, “Rubrics for the Easter Vigil,” no. 2).  On this holy night, the Church keeps watch, celebrating the resurrection of Christ in the sacraments and awaiting his return in glory.  It is the turning point of the Triduum, the Passover of the new covenant, which marks Christ’s passage from death to life. Therefore, the Easter Vigil does not correspond to the usual Saturday evening Mass and its character is unique in the cycle of the liturgical year.

Solemn Beginning of the Vigil: Lucernareum ( Service of Light) (page 162)  The Easter Vigil begins with the lighting of a new Paschal fire in the presence of the assembly  The fire is blessed by Father Ingram and the Paschal Candle is prepared and lighted from the new fire

Preparation of the Paschal Candle (page 164)  The priest may say the following in whole or in part as he scribes the design into the candle:  Christ yesterday and today the Beginning and the End the Alpha, and the Omega. All time belongs to him and all the ages. To him be glory and power through every age for ever. Amen  The priest may insert five grains of incense into the candle, held in place by wax nails:  1. By his holy 1 2. and glorious wounds may Christ our Lord 3 4. guard us 5. and keep us. Amen  Priest: “May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds”

Service of the Light (page 164) Procession ( in darkness)  At the door of the church, the deacon takes the Easter candle, lifts it high and sings alone: The light of Christ All answer: Thanks be to God  Then all enter the church, led by the deacon with the Easter candle.
