HMP Birmingham Service User Involvement See Me Healthcare Representatives

The initial remit of service user involvement in HMP Birmingham Six inmate focus groups to inform the redesign of IDTS service provision. Those attending the Nov 2010 groups were drawn from existing or discharged service users of IDTS & CARAT services. Leading to the development of healthcare representative roles.

Remit of a See Me Healthcare Representative. Negotiating with healthcare staff, senior officers and managers. Offering advice, support and guidance to fellow prisoners on healthcare matters. Collecting feedback on issues or concerns that may arise on wings. Provide information on healthcare services available in HMP Birmingham.

Rolling programme of engagement & communication mechanisms. Which include: Focus groups Service User narratives HMP Patient Experience Group Healthcare rep council meetings Consultation (BRIC for example) Questionnaires (Appendix G) A monthly healthcare newsletter.

Development Outcomes. Patient Experience Group meetings. To highlight common themes of service user feedback from a range of sources. PALS, Complaints, POhWER ICAS and See Me team. Report service user common themes & hot spots to Treatment Planning Meetings/HMP Clinical Governance and Operational meetings. Contribution to meeting healthcare key performance indicators. That if unmet would attract financial penalties. CQUINS for example.

Scope for Development. Build on Peer led support opportunities that inspire change In relation to successful recovery pathways. SMART recovery groups, NA, AA and awareness of community support options. Devise individual detox plans and support peers to devise their detox plans if required. Advocate on the behalf of inmates with nurses, doctors and officers. Regarding detox and recovery pathways. Develop community engagement opportunities for those retuning to the Birmingham locality.

Service users I have a terminal illness. Knowing what is happening about my hospital and GP appointments takes away some of the stress thanks to the reps Drop in surgeries on M&L wings so you can talk to a nurse about medication concerns is helpful Pharmacy drop in surgeries on wings are a positive move

See Me Representatives Constantly stating how crap it is doesnt achieve anything. Trying to change things can be difficult but rewarding I have detoxed and in recovery. Now people trust me as a rep and I can give something back. I now support people to write detox plans
