Quick Search Quick Search enables instant searching of all elements of the Study Centre. Your keyword will be matched against a range of related meanings using sophisticated search technology. All records which contain your search term will be brought back, in relevance order.

Your search term and related terms are highlighted in the text. Use the Previous and Next record buttons to move through your results.

Advanced Search Advanced Search allows more focused searching. Specify exactly which resources you want to search in – including the option to search specific reference volumes. Control how the search technology operates.

Choose whether to use Boolean operators or to expand your search to include variant spellings or related meanings. You can opt to restrict your search just to the title field, or just to biographical records. Select which resources to include in your search.

Study Units Study Units bring together essential information and rare documents, and encourage further research. Each Study Unit contains between articles, documents and images selected for their relevance to the topic.

Find Study Units using the Topic Tree. Click on a link to view the Study Unit you are interested in.

Each Study Unit begins with a brief introduction. Resources are grouped under different headings. Click on a heading to jump down to that section of the Study Unit.

Highlights Around five of the best items on each Study Unit are selected as highlights. Each Highlight has a brief explanatory caption. Click on the link to view the item.

Reference Library A library of around forty respected reference volumes, including encyclopaedias, historical atlases and historiographical guides. All volumes can be browsed through Tables of Contents. An ideal launching point for further research.
