Working with Black & Ethnic Minority Families WELCOME

DEFINITIONS BLACK ETHNIC MINORITY ASIAN MIXED RACE

Culture What culture did you identify with as a child? What culture do you identify with now? What have you left behind? What have you retained?

Principles, Values and Its Impact on Service Delivery I dont notice what race a person is, I just treat people as people

Principles, Values and Its Impact on Service Delivery The needs of black children and families are special and therefore they need special services

Principles, Values and Its Impact on Service Delivery Each culture has the right to bring up their children in a way that they see fit even when these may clash with my own

Principles, Values and Its Impact on Service Delivery Some practitioners hesitate to intervene in black families because they fear being accused of racism

Principles, Values and Its Impact on Service Delivery Black children in our care will know they are valued if we have positive black images on the wall

Principles, Values and Its Impact on Service Delivery Racism in the UK only affects black children

Principles, Values and Its Impact on Service Delivery Black families who come to the attention of our services tend to cope better if they are left to cope by themselves or turn to their community

Implications of Research Findings for our work Race Relations Amendment Act 2000 Human Rights 1998 The Children Act 1989/2004 Definitions - Institutional Racism - Culture - Discrimination Excellence not Excuses Black Children and child death

Institutional Racism The collective failure of an organisation to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture or ethnic origin. It can be seen or detected in processes, attitudes and behaviour which amount to discrimination through unwitting prejudice ignorance, thoughtlessness and racist stereotyping which disadvantage minority ethnic people. Taken from The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report By Sir William Macpherson 1999

Culture The work encompasses the artistic and intellectual accomplishments, religious beliefs and values of people who share the same racial or ethnic origin and/or language. Religion and culture are protected in law in so far as they are aspects of race. Ref: SSI Excellence not excuses - Inspection of services for ethnic minority, children and families

Discrimination A legal term which means treating a person less favourably than you would treat someone else
