Tuesday 10/5/2010 Do Now 1.What is the objective of today’s class? 2.The measurable factor in an experiment is known as the ________________. 3.The SI Base Unit for mass is ________. 4.The SI Base Unit for volume is ____________.

Class Checklist  No students were talking during the review of the Do Now, during teaching time (note-taking) and during closing. (2x)  Every student was on time  No curse words were used inside this room.  Every student remained in his/her seat until independent practice.  By the time Ms. Chan goes over this list, every table has 2 chairs behind it.  All students followed the class rules. (Students did not argue with Ms. Chan; everyone tried their best)  Every student brought THEIR OWN pencil and paper to class.  Every student followed directions the first time they were given.  Every student completed ALL the class work (including: Do Now, notes, class work)  No student had his/her head down during class.  It took Ms. Chan no more than 10 total seconds to get the entire class’s full attention (eyes forward, mouths shut).

Announcements Yesterday was the last day to make up the Unit 1 Test in class. If you missed it, you have until THURSDAY to make it up either before school, during advisory or after school.

Announcements There will be a “pop quiz” on Thursday at the end of class. This “pop quiz” is going to be ridiculously easy. They will be fact questions taken from your notes taken today and Thursday. There will be zero thinking involved.

Unit 2: MATTER (pg ) MATTER - Definition: anything that has mass and volume (takes up space) What are some examples of matter?

ELEMENT: pure substance that can’t be separated into simpler substance by physical or chemical means. – Examples: Oxygen, Nitrogen

- ATOMS – The smallest part of an element that has the properties of that element Composed of: Proton (+), Electron (-), Neutron (no charge)

COMPOUNDS Composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. – Examples: H 2 O, CO 2

MOLECULES Composed of 2+ elements (same or different) that are joined by chemical bonds – Elements can be the same. Ex: H 2, O 2, N 2 – Elements can be different. Ex: H 2 O, C 6 H 12 O 6 – NOTE: All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules can be compounds.

MIXTURES -Definition: A combo of 2+ substances that aren’t chemically combined. -Characteristics: -Substances held together by physical forces, not but chemical forces -Thus, mixtures can be separated via its physical properties Chem4kids.com

- Types of Mixtures – There are 2 main categories: 1. HOMOGENOUS – molecules that are mixed up in an even distribution

a. SOLUTIONS i. Def: a mixture that appears to be a single substance ii. Ex: lemonade, sugar water, Kool-aid, soda iii. SOLUTE – the substance being dissolved iv. SOLVENT – the substance in which the solute is being dissolved in. v. Water is considered a universal solvent, meaning almost everything can dissolve in it

vi. SOLUBILITY – the maximum amount of solute (in units of grams per Liter) that can dissolve in a solvent - Saturated solution – the max amount of solute has been dissolved into the solvent - Unsaturated solution – less than the maximum amount of solute has been dissolved into the solvent vii. Particles in a solution do not scatter light

b. Colloids i. Def: a mixture of tiny particles that are bigger than those in a solution, but smaller than those in a suspension ii. Do NOT settle out over time iii. Can scatter light iv. Ex: mayonnaise, milk, gelatin, whipped cream

2. HETEROGENOUS – molecules are NOT mixed up in an even distribution a. SUSPENSIONS i. Def: a mixture in which particles are dispersed (spread out) in a liquid or gas, and will eventually settle out ii. Particles can scatter light. iii. Particles can be filtered out using a filter iv. Ex: snow globe, sand in water, Italian salad dressing

Teach me how to study Begin studying notes 4-5 days before a test. Start small: 10 minutes the first day and then keep adding 5 more minutes. How to study: – Read over your notes. Highlight key (important) terms. Underline definitions/phrases. – Create flashcards. – Make your own study guide (summarize your own notes!) – Re-do problems from the HW assignments. – Do the test at the end of each chapter in your book.

Teach me how to study

Independent Practice Staple your worksheet into your notebook. Read over the notes we took today. Highlight the key science terms (the headings, new vocab words). Get a textbook from me if you haven’t done so already!

HOMEWORK Each worth 5 points. (write this into your agenda) 1.Flip through pg of your textbook. Write down 5 things you didn’t already know OR found interesting from those pages. Do this on a separate piece of paper. DUE TOMORROW. 2. LOGON to Do this week’s science article (on wildfires). Due Friday.
