DRE 099 Pilot PRESENTED BY ANGELINA OBERDAN AND HEIDI HUNTLEY (WITH SPECIAL THANKS TO KRIS DEANGELIS AND MARSI FRANCESCHINI) FROM CENTRAL PIEDMONT COMMUNITY COLLEGE

What We Are Going to Discuss DRE 099/ENG 111 Rationale DRE 099 Pilot Goals for Our ALP Program Components of Traditional ALP Programs Raw Academic Outcomes for ALP and Non-ALP Students DRE 099/ENG 111 Cohorts 2016SP Pilot Structure 16 Week Cohort Sample Schedules Focus: DRE 099 (2016SP PILOT) Why DRE 099? Review Questions/Feedback

Rationale: Because of the class size of DRE 099 and the inclusiveness of ENG 111, Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) students are much more likely to 1.COMPLETE ENG 111 AND ENG 112, 2.PERSIST TO THE NEXT YEAR, 3.AND COMPLETE MORE COLLEGE COURSES AND CREDITS THAN THEIR MATCHED NON-ALP COUNTERPARTS. 1

Pilot Goals for Our ALP Program: To increase DRE 099 student retention and completion of ENG 111/ENG 112. To increase the transfer rates, certification rates, and graduation rates. To continue to build community between instructors/students. To decrease the number of students needing remediation DRE 098/ENG 111. To decrease the number of exit points for students.

Components of Traditional ALP Programs: Students take their developmental-level writing course concurrently with the credit-level writing course rather than as a prerequisite. The pedagogy in the developmental ALP course is based on “backward design” from the ENG 111 course. The concurrent DRE 099 course is taught following ENG 111 by the same instructor and on the same day. Developmental writing students are mainstreamed into the college-level writing courses so that at least half of their classmates in ENG 111 are college- level writers. DRE099 classes are capped at 12 students.

DRE 099/ENG 111 Cohorts: Cohorts Include: DRE 099 ENG 111 (DRE 099 and ENG 111 will be taught by the same instructor) Curriculum: DRE 099- Reading and writing to align with and support ENG 111 ENG essays, one research paper/project

2016SP Pilot Structure: Class Sizes and Make Up: The 099’s should have a cap of 12. Note: 12 students who take 099 will have to register for the co-requisite ENG 111. The 111’s should have a cap of 25. The remaining 13 ENG 111 students will be college-level ENG 111 students. Cohort Types: ◦16 week course structure (two courses on Central and two courses on Levine)

16 Week Cohort Sample Schedules: Levine 1 ENG 111TR9:30-10:45 ENG 099 TR10:55-11:44 Levine 2 ENG 111MW12:30-1:45 ENG 099 MW2:00-2:50 Central 1 ENG 111TR9:30-10:43 ENG 099 TR10:55-11:44 Central 2 ENG 111MW12:30-1:45 ENG 099 MW2:00-2:50

Focus: DRE 099 (2016SP PILOT) DRE 099 Curriculum Goals Improved reading skills, writing strong sentences, paragraphs, and essays DRE 099 Requirements Overall course grade of 80% Final reading test grade of 80% Final ENG 111 research paper serves as final DRE 099 writing requirement (per State curriculum)

Why DRE 099? (For Students) Students enroll in two classes: 099 and 111 (5 credit hours, for 3 of which they’ll receive transferrable credit). Students get the developmental assistance they need (though curriculum is not just workshop/lab-based) while working with ENG 111 students. Students for a learning community; these connections will benefit them throughout their time at CPCC and afterwards. Students get to connect with their instructor and classmates more directly because there are only 12 students in their DRE 099 section.
